Avengers Infinity War ending: Writers admit THIS is a massive CLIFFHANGER for Avengers 4

Once upon a marvel-lous time, it was supposed to be Infinity War Part 1 and Part 2. This changed and the official message ever since has been that Infinity War stands complete and is not half of a larger story.

Now that the movie has finally hit cinemas in the UK (and the US tomorrow) it is clear that this is a matter of semantics.

The Russo brothers argue that Infinity War has “a beginning, middle and end” but now the writers themselves have admitted that the massive Avengers 3 “cliffhanger” is set to be a focus of “watercooler” discussions for the next year until Avengers 4 is released.

WARNING MAJOR SPOILERS

Joe Russo said of Infinity War: “Hopefully it’s a cathartic experience for them (fans) and they feel it was a worthy finale to 10 years of film-making.”

Anthony Russo added to Comicbook.com: “The experience we wanted to have at the end of this story was the sense of emotional completion… Hopefully they (the audience) will have that similar feeling…

“The mission was to not make one long movie and get out the scissors and cut it in half… The commitment was to try and put a beginning, middle, and end to this (Infinity War), and a beginning, middle, and end to that (Avengers 4).”

It’s unclear whether fans will agree after seeing the devastating final minutes of Avengers 3.

AVENGERS INFINITY WAR ENDING REVEALED NEXT: STOP READING IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE FILM

During Avengers 3 the Mad Titan kills some of the most belove Marvel character with his own hands, but worse is still to come.

Infinity War ends with Thanos finally collecting all six Infinity Stones and using the Infinity Gauntlet for The Snap.

This is when he ends half of all life in the universe and that includes many major Marvel superheoes who fall to dust in front of a horrified audience.

It is definitely a complete end to Thanos’ mission to restore balance and health to the universe by removing the burdens of overpopulation and abuse of natural resources.

It is definitely not a satisfactory ending for MCU fans who have just seen everyone from Black Panther to Spider-Man, Bucky and Groot erased from existence.

It is also an impossible ending, since fans know many of these characters have more movies lined up and so must somehow be brought back to life.

This is the very definition of a cliffhanger , when all seems lost but some, as yet unseen, way must be found to save the day.

The film’s screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely told Comicbook.com: “That’s a water cooler (moment)… Yes, you will have a water cooler year. You’ll have a water cooler, year.”

Thanos may feel his journey is complete but fans know the remaining Marvel heroes and the ones who will be introduced in Avengers 4, must find some way to undo it all. Infinity War does not complete their journey.

Get ready for a long year around the water cooler…
