Bumblebee: Hailee Steinfeld reveals SURPRISING secret behind Transformers prequel

The sci-fi film is a prequel to the Transformers franchise, with Travis Knight in the director’s chair where previously it was Michael Bay; and Christina Hodson penning the script. For Steinfeld, its star, it’s her first venture into blockbuster action movies – so how did she cope with the green screen style of movie-making?

Well, in a new interview, the popstar-actress revealed that there was actually very little green screen work involved at all.

In fact, much of the film was shot in “the real world” – but obviously she did not really have a giant Transformer to act with on set.

Speaking to HeyUGuys, she said: “I’ve done green screen work before, and this… What was interesting about this was I was almost expecting a lot of [green screen] but it was very little.

“Because it’s all special effects it was me in the real world but with nothing around me.”

“We made 90% of this movie with me and this Transformer – and it was really a tennis ball on a stick! So that was quite an interesting challenge.

“But it was amazing having our wonderful director, Travis Knight, who helped me bring everything to life.”

Bumblebee has had very strong reviews so far – and holds a full 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on the initial critiques.

This is significantly higher than ‘ordinary’, Bay-directed Transformers movies; which typically do enormous business at the box office but leave critics stone cold.

“Bumblebee is basically the movie that fans of the 1980s animated series wanted all along,” said Variety.

“Bumblebee… has just enough wit, playfulness and charm to develop a voice of its own, which is no small thing in the context of a flashy, lunkheaded studio franchise,” Los Angeles Times agreed.

Steinfeld also sings the main song from the film’s soundtrack, Back To Life.

Bumblebee is out on December 24 in the UK.
