Captain Marvel: Who is Mar-Vell? Trailer reveals Jude Law – but 'WON’T be same as comics'

While Carol Danvers is the version of Captain Marvel that is set to become a cinematic icon, there was another incarnation in the 1960s and 1970s – a Kree named Mar-Vell.

Feige, the Marvel Studios boss, teased earlier this year that he continues to be quite elusive.

“I knew some about him [beforehand], but it was definitely Carol Danvers who was most interesting to us and why we choose her,” he told Uproxx.

“But as that character connects to the origin of Carol Danvers’ Captain Marvel? We’re pulling from some of that for inspiration” – with emphasis on ‘some’.

Mar-Vell was first seen in December 1967 in Marvel Super-Heroes #12, as a Kree spy sent to observe the Earth, but who turns against his people.

But clear evidence continues to mount that his big-screen appearance will be very different, with some even speculating that Law is instead playing a version of secret villain Yon-Rogg rather than Mar-Vell (although the latter remains listed on IMDb).

“He is driven by a belief in the divine leadership of the Kree people. He’s almost a devout warrior — unquestioning, conservative, but inspirational,” Law told Entertainment Weekly.

“These extraordinary powers [Carol] has, he sees them as something of a blessing and something that she has to learn how to control.

“That’s a motif throughout the piece, the element of learning to control one’s emotions and to use your powers wisely.”

Larson added: “There’s a lot and back and forth that comes with the two of them, which kind of creates a little bit of tension with the rest of Starforce.

“Like, ‘Why do they have a special relationship, and why isn’t it me?'”

The trailer has caused a huge early reaction among fans, with many joking that Avengers villain Thanos’s days must now be numbered.

The Josh Brolin-played villain destroyed half of humanity at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, and Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) was seen trying to contact Carol in an end credits scene.

Larson has filmed scenes for next year’s follow-up Avengers 4, which is out less than two months after her 1990s-set solo movie.

Gemma Chan, Ben Mendelsohn and Mckenna Grace also star.

Captain Marvel is out on March 8, 2018.
