American slasher film Halloween is a direct sequel to the 1978 film of the same name.

Set 40 years after the original, Jamie Lee Curtis will reprise her role as Laurie Strode, as she faces crazy murderer Michael Myers once more.

Myers (played by Nick Castle) returns to Haddonfield, Illinois, with the intention of killing Strode after his failed attempt on Halloween night in 1978.

However, she also wants revenge against the serial killer.

What happens at the end of Halloween 2018?

WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for Halloween 2018

Green and his co-writer Danny McBride scrapped seven sequels until they found the perfect way of telling an emotional story about Strode’s long-awaited confrontation with Myers.

Director David Gordon Green has revealed to Polygon why the remake has tried to be as “true to the supernatural mythology of Michael Myers”.

At the end of Halloween, Laurie manages to lock Michael in the panic room in her cabin in the woods and torches the house.

Stroud’s family manages to flee to safety, but does Michael Myers die?

Green’s camera creeps back into the house and pans on what the audience assumes is Myer’s body.

But the audience doesn’t see it – or do they?

Green explained: “If you could linger it for another three seconds, you see him. Or you don’t see him, you’re more confident in what you’ve seen. I’ll say, it’s a two second shot,

which is not enough for you to be confident in what you saw.

”That, to me, is the fun. When you see the original film, you hear him breathing and you know that he lives on.

“Here, when we see the burning house, we actually hear Allyson breathing from the truck where she’s flagged off of a truck driver and she’s breathing heavily, turns, and then we go

into the answer to that house and it’s burning, but we’re hearing her breath over it, which depending on what theatre you hear it, it’s super subtle.”

Green added that this final scene was intentionally shot to leave the audience guessing.

This leaves the door open for a sequel, which Green is considering.

He said: “Maybe it’s done. Maybe this is the last story. Maybe it’s not.”

Halloween is released in cinemas on October 19
