Incredibles 2 has been long anticipated by Pixar fans worldwide, with the original film being released in 2004.

This means fans have had a monumental 14 year wait for the sequel starring the Parr family.

Time-honoured Pixar tradition saw a new short premiere before the opening scene of Incredibles 2 began.

What was the Pixar short before Incredibles 2?

The short was titled Bao and was the first Pixar short to be filmed by an Asian woman.

INCREDIBLES 2 SPOILERS: WHAT IS FROZONE’S FATE IN INCREDIBLES SEQUEL?

Bao was made by Chinese-Canadian director Domee Shi, who describes her story as a “magical, modern-day fairy tale, kind of like a Chinese Gingerbread Man story.”

Ms Shi’s mother, a Chinese-Canadian immigrant, served as a cultural consultant for the short.

Her dumpling-making skills were put to superb use, ensuring the movie’s animated scenes were as accurate as possible.

Bao tells the story of a woman with a busy husband, seemingly suffering from empty nest syndrome.

INCREDIBLES 2 SEQUEL: WILL THERE BE AN INCREDIBLES 3?

One day the unnamed-mother makes a bad dumpling, which comes to life as a baby boy.

She raises the dumpling as her own child but eventually, the dumpling-child wants to join other kids against his mother’s wishes.

As her dumpling song grows up, he starts wanting more and more independence from his mom.

At the same time, the mother wants more attention from him.

The dumpling introduces his parents to his new fiancée and tells his parents he wants to move out of the home.

His mother, in a fit of panic, stops him by swallowing him whole.

Upon realising what she’s done, she bursts into tears and relegates herself to her room.

Sometime later, as the mother lies in bed, her actual son enters the room at his father’s behest.

Her son’s presence reveals to the audience the whole sequence involving the bao baby was fiction.

The son, who bears an uncanny resemblance to bao-baby, tries to comfort his mother and offers her the same snack she gave the baa-baby..

As they share it they both cry and the short ends with the whole family, including the real son’s fiancée, making dumplings.

Bao is a tearjerker, to say the least, and will undoubtedly move audiences ahead of the family-friendly humour filled Incredibles 2.
