Jofra Archer exited the Headingley outfield holding his hamstring as England’s dismal day two at Headingley took an even worse turn.

After returning to the attack, Archer winced and moved gingerly just four balls into his spell.

Although England’s fiercest seamer did not look in agony, he had to be withdrawn from the field of play as Stokes completed the final two balls of his over.

The Sussex man held his hamstring as he limped off, aided by a member of England’s coaching staff.

It is unclear whether England’s new hero, who took six wickets in the first innings, was merely suffering from cramp or a more serious soft tissue issue.

It compounded a dreadful day for England, who may well have spurned their chance to regain The Ashes.

They headed into the day in a commanding position having bowled out Australia for 179, with the sun shining on a beautiful Headingley deck.

But it was Australia quicks who shone, not the England batsmen.

Jason Roy’s woes atop the order continued as he nicked the ball to David Warner off Josh Hazlewood, who produced a fine fast bowlng display to claim figures of 5 for 30.

The seamer found the edge of an English bat, this time Joe Root’s, and Warner once again as the England captain left for 0.

As Pat Cummins got Rory Burns to find Tim Paine behind the stumps, James Pattison then joined the party, getting the ball to nibble of the surface and send Joe Denly and Ben Stokes back to the dressing room.

Australia were consistent with their good length and continued to draw shots from England batsmen who showed no apt temperament in a testing situation.

Hopes that the middle order of Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler and Chris Woakes could buttress a fightback were squashed by Hazlewood and Cummins as England fell for an abysmal 67.

Although England replied quickly with the ball, Stuart Broad trapping Warner LBW for 0, the visitors largely weathered the seam storm they succumbed to yesterday.

No milestone innings came from the Aussies but accumulation kept them in the ascendancy, with England facing a steep chase if they are to win the third Test and have any chance of regaining The Ashes.

Archer’s exit could be fatal for England if it is more than cramp but, in truth, the fate of Root’s side already looks sealed.

Even if the seamer’s hamstring is not torn, England’s fight to regain The Ashes is already in tatters.
