It’s one of American literature’s best-loved novels, and now Little Women is getting its eighth, yes eighth, film adaptation.

Lady Bird’s Greta Gerwig is on writing and directing duties, reuniting Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet.

According to production notes: “Writer-director Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird) has crafted a Little Women that draws on both the classic novel and the writings of Louisa May Alcott, and unfolds as the author’s alter ego, Jo March, reflects back and forth on her fictional life.

“In Gerwig’s take, the beloved story of the March sisters – four young women each determined to live life on her own terms – is both timeless and timely. Portraying Jo, Meg, Amy, and Beth March, the film stars Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, with Timothée Chalamet as their neighbor Laurie, Laura Dern as Marmee, and Meryl Streep as Aunt March.”

While the official synopsis reads: “Little Women explores the lives of the March sisters in 1860s New England, in the aftermath of the American Civil War.

“According to one of its producers, the new adaptation focuses more on the sisters’ young adult lives, particularly after Meg, Jo, and Amy leave their family home.

“The film jumps back and forth in time and focuses more on themes rather than narrative.”

With a Christmas release, no doubt Sony Pictures is hoping for awards season success for Little Woman.

After all, Saoirse Ronan is only 25-years-old and has already been nominated for three Oscars and four BAFTAs.

Nevertheless, Little Women will have some tough competition at the 2020 Oscars.

Tomorrow  is released in the UK and currently has the best odds of 6-1 to win Best Picture.

This isn’t too surprising considering the incredible cast of Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie, the fact Tarantino hasn’t won for Best Director or Best Picture yet and most of all the Academy can’t resist a movie about their very own Tinsel Town.

Meanwhile, according to Coral, is at 8-1 for the top Oscar while Cats, A Beautiful Day in The Neighbourhood, 1917, The Laundromat and The Lighthouse are all on 10-1.

In comparison, Little Women is on around 20-1 across the bookies

Little Women is released this Christmas.
