Star Wars: Mark Hamill calls on Solo movie to correct THIS Chewbacca ‘plot hole’

Solo: A Star Wars Story tells the story of Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich) as a younger man, including how he met Chewbacca the Wookie.

But Hamill has jokily joined in on a light-hearted Twitter debate about Chewbacca’s very name.

Steve Gadlin tweeted him: “Hey @HamillHimself – how did we know Chewbacca’s name is Chewbacca if Chewbacca can’t even say Chewbacca?

“Chewbacca isn’t a dog and shouldn’t be ‘named’. He has a name. How did we find out it’s Chewbacca if he can’t even say Chewbacca?”

Hamill replied: “If #SoloAStarWarsStory doesn’t answer this question it will ruin my childhood.”

Some fans, however, have pointed out a potential explanation.

It’s thought that Han can actually understand Wookie, just not speak it – so it’s very possible that Chewie could have relayed his name that way.

Or, as Twitter user Raul Acosta suggested: “If Chewie can fix and fly ships, maybe it’s not farfetched to think that, maybe, he could type on a datapad Wookie to Aurebesh words” – and teach Han his name that way.

Either way, hype is slowly starting to build for Solo: A Star Wars Story, after a year of production troubles and trailers that received a mixed response.

Director Ron Howard has clarified that Ehrenreich was never supposed to be doing an imitation of Ford – insisting that inhibiting the character doesn’t mean doing an impersonation.

“It was always clear from the beginning, before I was involved, that it was not going to be an impression of Harrison,” Howard explained to Empire.

“No-one wanted that. Part of Han Solo’s character is sort of a vibe and a feel and a body language.”

Ehrenreich is joined by Donald Glover as a younger Lando Calrissian, as well as Emilia Clarke, Thandie Newton, Woody Harrelson, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Paul Bettany.

Solo: A Star Wars Story is out on May 25.
