Venom mid-credit scene: Who is Carnage?

Tom Hardy stars as the eponymous anti-hero/journalist Eddie Brock, who bonds with an alien symbiote and is granted superpowers.

Together with the symbiote, Brock becomes Venom and the Jekyll and Hyde pair become a force for good. Sort of.

Their antagonist in the Venom movie is a man named Carlton Drake who is bonded with a symbiote to become Riot.

Venom, like all good superhero movies, has its own mid-credit scene to tease a potential sequel…

Warning: this article contains spoilers.

Who is Carnage?

The villains teased in the mid-credit scene is Carnage, aka Cletus Kasady.

Kasady is played by Woody Harrelson, and in the mid-credit scene, he is shown in solitary confinement at San Quentin prison.

In the Marvel comics, Brock is an out-and-out villain sharing a cell with Kasady when Brock’s symbiote comes to break him out of jail.

VENOM AGE RATING: DOES VENOM HAVE AN AGE RATING?

Unknowingly, Venom leaves some symbiote behind which bonds with Kasady to create Carnage.

The Sony movie, however, has Brock as an anti-hero, not a villain, meeting Kasasdy for an exclusive prison interview.

Perhaps the same mistake will be made, with Venom somehow leaving behind a trace of himself to bond with Kasady.

Fans will have to wait till the Venom sequel to know for sure.

VENOM RELEASE DATE: WHEN IS VENOM STARRING TOM HARDY OUT IN UK AND US?

The comics show Carnage making Kasady even more unstable and dangerous than before.

Set in New York City, the comics also see Venom and Spider-Man teaming up to defeat Carnage.

Movies based on comic books do tend to take liberties, and the Venom sequel will likely have to take quite a few to make up for the lack of Spider-Man in the Venom-verse.

Where the movie stays true to the comics was in Harrelson’s hair colour – the red curls are the same as the comic’s version of Kasady.

Harrelson closes out the mid-credit scene by uttering an ominous sentence.

VENOM: EMINEM DROPS SURPRISE ALBUM FEATURING A SONG FOR THE VENOM FILM

“When I get out of here, and I will, there’s gonna be Carnage.”

Harrelson himself signed on to Venom knowing he would only appear in a sliver of the first movie.

“I haven’t read [the Venom 2] script, but anyways, just rolled the dice,” Harrelson told Collider of signing on to Venom.

When Venom 2 finally comes around, fans will be treated to Harrelson’s take on the infamous villain.

Venom is in UK cinemas now and is out in USA cinemas on October 5, 2018.
