Warm Home Discount Scheme offers £140 off energy bill during winter – are you eligible?
Keeping warm during the winter is essential, and as Britons spend significantly more time at home due to the coronavirus pandemic, it’s more important than ever. It’s during this time of year that energy bills tend to increase, however there may be some forms of support available.
Who is eligible for the Warm Home Discount Scheme?
There are two ways in which a person can qualify for the scheme.
How a person qualifies for the discount will affect how they need to apply.
First is known as the “core group”, and this means the person gets the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit.
A person qualifies in this group if on July 5, 2020, all of the following apply:
- Their energy supplier is part of the scheme
- Their name (or their partner’s) is on the bill
- They are getting the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit (even if they get Savings Credit as well).
The “broader group” is referred to for people who are on a low income and who meet their energy supplier’s criteria for the scheme.
Should a person not qualify via the core group, they may do under the broader group.
If a person uses a pre-pay or a pay-as-you-go electricity meter, they can still qualify.
The electricity supplier can tell them how they will get the discount, if eligible, such as via a voucher.
Those in the broader group should note that their electricity supplier decides who can get the discount, and it’s the supplier they should check with regarding eligibility and how to apply.
The government states: “Check with your supplier as early as possible. The number of discounts suppliers can give are limited.”
