Man Utd news: Jose Mourinho and ‘very average’ Red Devils slammed despite Young Boys win
That is the opinion of BT Sport pundit Michael Owen.
The Red Devils boss stole the headlines with his reaction to midfielder Marouane Fellaini’s stoppage-time strike in the Champions League against Young Boys at Old Trafford last night.
That sealed a 1-0 win and prompted Mourinho to thrash a basket of drinks bottles towards the ground – with the Portuguese boss having already attracted social media criticism for his reaction to an early Marcus Rashford miss, shaking his head in the direction of his bench.
Mourinho’s United have endured a difficult season so far and are struggling in the Premier League, though their win over their Swiss opponents ensured their place in the last 16 of the Champions League.
But despite their progress, former United forward Owen believes the late winning goal over Young Boys simply “papered over the cracks” of another poor display after disappointing performances against Man City and Crystal Palace in their last two games.
And Owen blasted Mourinho’s tactics after United resorted to pumping balls into the box late on.
He said on BT’s Champions League highlights show: “I think he is [worn down].
“I think he’s watching the same game as us and it’s not just been for two or three weeks that it’s been poor, it’s been for two or three years.
“Look at the empty seats there tonight – Manchester United not selling out their stadium, it’s unbelievable.
“What you’re seeing is poor performances and that goal in the last minute has papered over the cracks once again.
“Yes they’re through and yes they should celebrate that, it wasn’t an easy group with Valencia in as well.
“But that’s papering over cracks, it’s been very, very average and it’s been average for some time.
“Even though it’s happened and everyone’s celebrating it [the goal], I still sit uncomfortable with it.
“I can’t believe that’s the Manchester United way to go, last minute, going long.
“United to me is wide players, it’s speed, it’s getting even more attacking, strikers on the pitch, trying these one-twos and great quick play.
“Lumping the ball into the box in the last minute? Okay it’s worked, but it’s not for me.”
United face Southampton away from home in their next game on Saturday (5.30pm).
