Idris Elba, 46, has soared to success thanks to his BBC drama series Luther. Luther has been ongoing since 2010 and is now returning for its fifth series, making the London-born star a household name. Alongside the hit series, Idris has starred in Hollywood blockbusters as well as TV shows – and he moonlights as a DJ. His expansive career has given the star a very impressive net worth.

According to Celebrity Net Worth, Idris has an eye-watering fortune of £15.6 million ($20 million USD).

His staggering fortune is down to a life-long acting career, as well as projects he’s taken on outside of the industry.

In the US, Idris is most well known for his role of businessman Russell ‘Stringer’ Bell in HBO series The Wire.

Meanwhile, his role as Detective John Luther on BBC One only made his popularity soar.

He has also worked as a producer and writer, acting as executive producer on Netflix series Turn Up Charlie and In the Long Run.

Idris has also starred in both Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Infinity War as the character Heimdall.

At the end of 2016, the star was honoured with an OBE for his services to drama.

The dad of two started his acting career in Canning Town, where he discovered his passion for drama.

He landed a place in the National Youth Music Theatre thanks to a £1,500 grant from the Prince’s Trust.

Between acting roles, Idris worked in jobs such as tyre-fitting and cold call advertising sales, according to IMDB.

He also worked in nightclubs in his late teens, under the name DJ Big Drills before auditioning for TV roles in his early-20s.

Idris often DJs now and has even played at Ibiza Rocks and Glastonbury.

Worlds away from the DJ life, his new season of Luther returns on New Year’s Day and it’s set to be a gruesome series.

While fans currently don’t have any idea what to expect from the much anticipated series, Idris has made some large promises for its quality.

Luther has been absent from the world for three years, now, and Idris explained that “getting all the ingredients together at the right time, in the right space, has taken a bit of work”.

Speaking to press Idris went on to say the gaps between series were necessary.

He told Digital Spy: “Luther wouldn’t work if we did it year-in, year-out, because it’s very dark.

“I think for Neil, and the producers, and my sanity… I couldn’t do this all the time.”
