Labour MP ADMITS second referendum on Brexit would be ‘disastrous’ for Parliament

The Ashton-under-Lyne MP warned Prime Minister Theresa May she would be “reckless” if she ignored the outcome of tonight’s crucial votes. On Wednesday, Mrs May suffered fresh humiliation as MPs narrowly voted to ensure a no deal Brexit was off the cards. When quizzed on ITV’s Peston the 38-year-old refused to rule out going back to the people.

But she did admit doing so would be a failure.

She said: “What we have always said is that we want to find a deal.

“We respect the referendum result and genuinely want to find something.

“We’ve said to avoid a catastrophic no deal or the Prime Minister’s disastrous deal, the only way forward would be to put back to the people.”

When challenged about her own views by the show’s host Robert Peston, Ms Rayner added: “I think it would be disastrous for us as MPs to go back to the people with it if we failed to find a consensus.”

The vote on Wednesday saw the Government lost by a majority of just four votes.

The initial motion was tabled by former Cabinet minister Dame Caroline Spelman.

Mrs May vowed that no deal will remain on the table despite the votes, and Tuesday’s vote against her deal on Tuesday.

The EU Commission said last night Brussels has “a deal” with Theresa May and the “EU is ready to sign it”.

A spokesman added: ““There are only two ways to leave EU, with or without a deal.

“EU is prepared for both. To take no deal off the table, it is not enough to vote against no deal – you have to agree to a deal.

“We have agreed a deal with the PM and EU is ready to sign it.”
