Boxing fans SLAM Floyd Mayweather after 'cringeworthy' announcement
The 50-0 former pound-for-pound king has not had a competitive fight since 2015 – bar an exhibition against kick boxer Tension Nasukawa and a crossover fight against UFC star Conor McGregor.
However, fans were sent into a frenzy this week as ‘Money’ Mayweather teased an announcement on Wednesday, posing in a video with one of his WBC world title belts.
Fans immediately began to speculate that Mayweather was set to announce a rematch with long-term rival Manny Pacquiao.
The pair fought in 2015, in the star’s penultimate fight before his retirement.
Speculation has been rife that the pair are interested in a rematch, as it has been suggested that it could generate over 2 million pay-per-view buys in America.
However, instead of announcing a comeback to boxing, or a mixed martial arts fight, he announced a new betting partnership.
In a video posted to Instagram, the 42-year-old squashed any hope fans had of him returning to the ring any time soon.
In the comments section, usually locked by Mayweather, fans let their feelings be known about the announcement.
“This is the biggest nothing announcement I think I’ve ever heard,” one fan posted.
Another wrote: “Man I was so gassed for this…”
“And everybody thought he’s gonna fight Pacquiao,” another pointed out.
“Wtf is this b******t?” one raged.
Another fan wrote: “All that anticipation for nothing. That isn’t “big news”, you wasted everyone’s time.”
One commented: “What the hell is this lmao cringeworthy”
“Not the announcement that everyone was hoping and expecting for,” one more fan posted.
