Lennon fell to his knees after a 2-1 win at Hampden Park secured Celtic their ninth straight domestic trophy – a feat never before achieved in Scottish football.

Although the Northern Irishman hid his face there was ostensibly no tears as he regained composure and got to his feet.

The Bhoys manager then walked over to opposite number Craig Levein, who almost masterminded a win which would have spoiled the Hoops’ party.

The pair embarced before Lennon then went onto the pitch to celebrate with his staff and players.

In the build-up to the final, Lennon reiterated his belief that there was no pressure on him regarding the outcome of the final; only the players.

Lennon was recruited to the head coach role in February following Brendan Rodgers’ departure to Leicester, and has swept up the last two trophies to achieve the treble treble.

The 47-year-old is a club legend having won five major trophies in a previous managerial stint at Parkhead, but the board have not yet confirmed whether he will stay on past this season.

Celtic captain Scott Brown was asked whether Lennon should be given the job, replying: “Yeah, definitely.

“He’s been fantastic since coming in. He had to win the league and win a Cup – he’s done that.

“It’s due to Brendan setting everything up for us and Neil’s continued that. It’s been a great season so far and I’m sure we’ll enjoy the celebrations.”

Although Celtic can bathe in their success this evening, which will start with a bus parade around the city of Glasgow, it was not plain sailing on Saturday afternoon.

Hearts took the lead early in the second half after a neat backheel set up Ryan Edwards in the box, with the Australian tucking home.

Stunned Celtic fans soon refound their voices, however, as prolific frontman Odsonne Edouard equalised from the penalty spot 10 minutes later.

The £9million summer signing then rounded off the historic Scottish Cup win in the 82nd minute, pouncing on a defensive mistake to coolly slot home past Zdenek Zlamal.

Asked after the game how he felt stepping up to take spotkick which turned the tide, the Frenchman said: “I’m never nervous.

“When I took the penalty, I knew I would score the penalty. I’m very happy to score today, but the team is important, I’m very happy for them.

“It was a very good atmosphere today, to win the treble one more time, I’m very happy at this.”
