Nadal was leading his clash with Nishikori 6-1 6-1 4-2 when they were told to leave the court due to an imminent thunderstorm.

The 11-time champion protested and wanted to continue playing but eventually backed down and left.

Moments later the heavens opened and a downpour hit the Stade Roland Garros tennis complex.

But as fans waited for play to resume some received information from the tournament via their app.

The notification said: “K.Nishikori v R.Nadal is postponed until tomorrow.”

However, the match has NOT been postponed and will resume at 5.30pm UK time.

Nadal will be keen to get the match wrapped up as soon as possible before any more rain comes along.

During Eurosport’s coverage of the match, commentators Chris Brabham and tennis legend John McEnroe captured Nadal’s reaction to being told the match will be suspended.

“Nadal is really wanting to continue,” Brabham said.

“He’s walked back to the baseline whereas the gentleman on the court is saying no we’re stopping – and Nadal is furious.”

McEnroe replied: “Nishikori is not wanting to stop either. Unlike the two on Lenglen.”

Brabham: “Here we are on Chatrier and look at his face.”

McEnroe: “Come on let’s play.”

Brabham: “Well he’s not being allowed to.”

McEnroe: “Must be [the] lightning.”
