Queen: Roger Taylor thought John Deacon's music tastes were 'boll***s'
Brian May describes the differences between the Multi-talented Queen band members perfectly: ‘We were like four painters with a brush each but one canvas.” Perhaps the biggest gulf was between Brian May and John Deacon. Taylor has bluntly described how they have had no contact for over a decade and called his reclusive bandmate a “sociopath.” He also made no secret of his resistance in the beginning to tracks like Another One Bites The Dust, which Deacon wrote.
In a major new interview with Mojo magazine, May reveals Taylor’s objections to the track; “I remember Roger didn’t want to play the pattern that way. But Roger played the drums the way John wanted him to and made the drums sound very rhythm and blues or disco.”
Taylor himself adds; “I was never opposed to Another One Bites The Dust. I just didn’t think it would be a hit.”
The drummer’s refreshingly candid nature extends to his dismissal of some of Deacon’s music tastes as “boll***s” as he reveals the differences were there from the very beginnings of the band.
QUEEN INTERVIEW: BRIAN MAY REVEALS ‘TERRIBLE’ FIGHTS BETWEEN THE BAMD ‘WE WERE MERCILESS’
Taylor told Mojo: “We had diverse influences, but also certain groups in common. Brian, Freddie and I especially…
“John Deacon was different, though, even before he got into funk. When we met him John was into Yes. I liked Yes, too, but John really liked Yes. Tales From Topographic… boll***s or whatever – a bit too proggy for me.
“I also remember having a heated discussion with him about Lennon vs McCartney. John was a great fan of solo McCartney..whereas I was a great fan of Lennon’s first solo album. John’s tastes were just different.”
In the same interview, May reveals how often the band fought: “We said terrible things” but described as like being in a family.
Taylor prefers to damn with faint praise when he talks of Deacon and Mercury beloved funk album Hot Space; “ “I always hated the cover, but, musically, the album was OK…”
