New York and Michigan suffer major power cuts as dangerous heatwave strikes 800,000 people

Fox News reported 800,000 homes and businesses had been hit after two days of storms. Power is not expected to restored until Tuesday for some after several thousand lines and wires are believed to have been taken out. Thanks to humidity, temperatures felt as hot at 110F (43C).

Power company Con Ed told customers in southeast Brooklyn to “conserve energy while company crews work to repair equipment problems.”

Voltage was decreased by 8 percent to allow repairs to be made.

Andrew Cuomo, the New York Governor ripped into Con Ed for their performance.

Mr Cuomo tweeted: “We’ve been through this situation w ConEd time & again & they should have been better prepared—period.”

Power companies warned a spike in air conditioning use might result in outages before the heatwave had begun.

City officials advised thermostats to be set no lower than 78F (26C), in order to reduce pressure on the city’s grid.

New York City mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted that the “accumulated heat and strain from the past few days has built up in the electrical equipment.”

A commendation of the moon landing and a festival featuring Women’s World Cup winner Megan Rapine and musician John Legend were cancelled due to the heat.
