Bohemian Rhapsody ‘Freddie Mercury’s manager Paul Prenter wasn’t ALL bad’ says Brian May

Bohemian Rhapsody saw Allen Leech play Freddie Mercury’s manager and lover Paul Prenter. A person that many Queen fans have regarded as Freddie’s Judas, for selling a story to The Sun about the singer’s personal life and intimate relationships. This gave the press the first whiff of illness by including that Freddie’s former partners were dying of AIDS. Meanwhile, Prenter was blamed for Queen’s 1982 album Hot Space failing to be as good as it could have been.

Both Brian May and Roger Taylor were particularly unhappy with the album’s sound.

Prenter was also accused of stopping Freddie appearing on the radio to connect with his fans.

But now May has said that while Prenter is portrayed as something of a villain in Bohemian Rhapsody, he wasn’t that bad in reality.

The Queen guitarist posted a snap of the band with Prenter in the background, commenting on the former manager and lover of Freddie.

May wrote: “Obscured behind Freddie is Paul Prenter, now known to you all as a character in a film, and something of a bad guy, although, of course, he wasn’t ALL bad !

“Biopic movies are always, necessarily, a montage of simplifications (otherwise the film would be years long and unwatchable !)

“But hopefully distilled in a responsible way to tell a decent story. Swipe for a zoom in. Bri.”

Certainly, Bohemian Rhapsody lacks aspects of reality surrounding Prenter’s relationship with Freddie.

The film sees Prenter fired by Freddie in 1985 for failing to inform him about the opportunity of performing at Live Aid.

So in revenge, the former manager outs the singer in a TV interview.

However, in real-life Prenter wasn’t fired until 1986 and never gave such a TV interview, but sold The Sun story instead.
