Every time a new movie from Marvel is announced, fans scramble to try and guess who could be the big villain. From Hela to Thanos to Ulysses Klaue, there has been a huge range of villains shown on-screen. While many villains don’t have as lasting a legacy as the heroes who defeat them, there are some who may truly breakthrough.

In an exclusive interview with ExpressOnline, the UK’s only comic book professor, Professor Chris Murray, reveals who he thinks could be a fantastic villain for the MCU.

Professor Murray said: “In terms of major villains I would love to see Dr Doom. That’s a role just waiting for a great character actor to bring to life!”

Doctor Doom made his debut in 1962 in The Fantastic Four.

He has come into conflict with a whole host of heroes in his publication history, including Thor, Doctor Strange, Black Panther and the Avengers.

Victor Von Doom was born to a tribe of Latvian Romani people, and his mother was witch Cynthia Von Doom who died at the hand of Mephisto, a demon-like character.

His father escaped with him and died during their escape, but Victor returned to his Romani camp and discovered his mother was an occultist, leading him to swear revenge on the man who killed his family.

Eventually, Victor moved to the USA and soon had a run in with Ben Grimm, also known as Thing from The Fantastic Four.

He is expelled after an accident caused by Grimm’s sabotage of his work, which caused him to have severe facial scarring, he mastered the disciplines of a band of monks which helped him, along with the legacy of his mother, to become Doctor Doom.

Victor forged a suit of armour and iron mask to finally allow him to fight and very quickly is forced to fight The Fantastic Four, Spider-Man and Scarlet Witch.

He has genius-level intellect but is also arrogant, meaning he could be a villainous version of someone like Tony Stark, but with much more resentment for the injustice he has suffered.

However, Professor Murray did not only suggest Doctor Doom as a fantastic villain to be seen on-screen, but also the terrifying Galactus.

Galactus is very different from the standard villain, as he is a comic entity, formerly a mortal, who consumed planet to sustain his life force.

He is forced by this hunger and requirement to be a destroyer of worlds, however, he is compelled to do this rather than someone who enjoys causing pain and suffering to others.

Galactus has been seen on screen already, in the 2007 movie Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.

This is why, when asked, Professor Murray specified he would like to see Galactus “done right.”

Unlike some villains, Galactus would require a higher level of complexity given his supposed desire not to be the villain he is forced to be.

As well as this, as he was initially introduced as a celestial being, he could be a great villain for The Eternals, a group of humanoids who are constantly fighting larger entities than just humans.

With that being said, Ikaris, the Eternals character who will be played by Richard Madden in the MCU, is fuelled by cosmic energy and has been seen as a villain in various iterations, like when he was being controlled by the Kree.

Perhaps there will be an opportunity for these characters to come head to head with Galactus and show a battle of true celestial power alongside heroes such as Captain Marvel and Thor.

The Eternals is expected to be released in November 2020
