Will Meghan join Harry at Invictus Games?
The opening ceremony for the Invictus Games will be held in Toronto later with speculation growing over whether Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will officially appear in public together for the first time.
On Friday Harry was in the city meeting with some of the five hundred competitors who have travelled to Canada from 17 different nations to take part in the Paralympic style sports event for those who’ve been physically injured or psychologically affected by their time in the armed forces.
Harry spent time talking to team members from the UK, Australia and Romania among others as they carried out their final training sessions at the Pan Am Sports centre in Toronto.
While Harry wants the focus to be on the remarkable stories of bravery shared by the competitors there is more focus on this games due to the rumours and reports that his actress girlfriend Meghan Markle may appear alongside him during the week-long event.
Markle lives and works in Toronto, with Suits, the legal drama that made her famous, filmed on location in the city.
On Friday Sky News filmed the cast of the hit show running through their scripts as they prepared to film scenes for the latest series.
Markle didn’t appear to be on set but Patrick J Adams, who plays her on-screen love interest Mike Ross in the show, was on location.
Shinan Govani, a social columnist who works for the Toronto Star, has reported on Markle’s rise to fame and says she has become more reclusive and careful about her online profile since she started dating Prince Harry.
He said: “Much as Meghan has been omnipresent in the media since news of the romance broke, she herself has sort of vanished in the city.
“We hear a lot about her, but she’s not out at restaurants and at parties. There seems to be a case of her in lockdown.”
The palace has not confirmed whether Prince Harry and Markle will be attending any public events together, but any appearance would be significant as it would be their first official outing as a couple.
Prince Harry will deliver a speech at the Opening ceremony for the Invictus Games on Saturday night in front of thousands of spectators and competitors.
He is also due to hold meetings with the First Lady Melania Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau who are in the city to support the event.
With 2.5 million veterans in the UK, the event throws light on the fact that support for those who have served does not just come from the Ministry of Defence, but mostly from charities like those involved in the games.
Lamin Manneh is one of those who will be competing for the UK Invictus team.
In 2010, he lost both his legs and an arm during an explosion in Afghanistan, where he was serving with the Irish Guards.
He took part in the last year’s second Invictus games in Orlando and has been training hard for Toronto.
Mr Manneh told Sky News that being involved has been life-changing: “When I’m doing sitting volleyball, I feel I can express myself.
“The way I move, to attack the ball, the way I defend the ball, the way I move… that’s what it gives me a sense of freedom, a sense of being myself.”
