Spider-Man fans were unsettled when news first broke the Marvel superhero would be pulled from the MCU by Sony, who own the cinematic rights to the character. However, Sony and Disney later reached a new agreement, meaning Marvel Studios will continue to have a hand in the Spider-Man films.

In a new interview with MTV International, Tom Holland, who plays Peter Parker, has spoken out on the plan which had been in place for the new Spider-Man, free from the MCU.

“The future of Spider-Man was really, really bright with Sony,” he emphasised.

“We had a really, really wonderful idea of how we could sort of transition into a Spider-Man without the MCU.”

Holland went on to say Sony bosses were “confident” they would be able to live up to the success of the recent films, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home, both of which were produced by Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige.

“[Sony’s] Tom Rothman and Amy Pascal were really confident they were going to do justice and make a film that was the calibre that Spider-Man requires,” Holland said.

Nonetheless, he’s glad to be remaining in the MCU.

“That said, I’m really glad to be back in the MCU and to have the team back together because I kind of fell that’s where he belongs now,” the Spider-Man star admitted.

“I’m really grateful that [Disney boss] Bob Iger and Tom Rothman allowed me to be a part of the process of bringing him home.

“It was a pretty cool experience and also the best bragging rights ever: I saved Spider-Man,” he quipped.

Initially, reports emerged last summer that Disney, the parent company of Marvel, and Sony had failed to reach an agreement regarding a new financing deal, with the forming wanting a 50/50 split.

In September, however, after announcing Spider-Man would be leaving the MCU, they signed a new deal.

The updated agreement, according to Variety, sees Feige stay on as a producer while Marvel and Disney receiving around 25 per cent of the profits.

Disney will reportedly keep merchandising rights as well and front approximately 25 per cent of the financing.

The publication also claims Spider-Man will appear in one future Marvel film.

At the time, Feige said: “I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it.

“Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe.
