Ian Fleming’s spy may be fictional, but MI6’s Secret Intelligence Service is very much real. And now MoneyShake have worked out just how much would be paid in real-life. It turns out the starting salary as an Intelligence Agent for Her Majesty’s Government is £42,700.

However, Bond would have been earning £85,997 as a Royal Navy Commander beforehand.

Nevertheless, the SIS starting salary would not be enough for him to afford his £2 million luxury Chelsea home, although he could afford to rent in London.

Meanwhile, his new Aston Martin Valhalla, which will appear in Daniel Craig’s No Time To Die is estimated to be worth £1 million.

Presumably, the taxpayer is covering that one with all its gadgets?

Talking of gadgets, if you’d prefer to be an SIS Quartermaster like Q the starting salary is significantly less.

If you applied to be an Infrastructure Engineering Apprentice it begins at just £24,420.

Meanwhile, a secretary like Miss Moneypenny would have a starting salary of slightly more on £29,832.

This is based on being an SIS Business Support Officer who helps ensure “the smooth running of the Service.”

Nevertheless, the big bucks go to MI6 chief M, whose starting salary is £160,000.

In real-life, the SIS boss is called C and his real name is Sir Alex Younger.

Back in 2016, he famously said that Bond would fail the MI6 recruitment process.

Speaking with the Black History Month website, he said: “[Bond’s] stereotype really couldn’t be further from the truth.”

Younger added: “In contrast to James Bond, MI6 officers are not for taking moral shortcuts.

“In fact, a strong ethical core is one of the first qualities we look for in our staff.

“It’s safe to say that James Bond wouldn’t get through our recruitment process.

“Whilst we share his qualities of patriotism, energy and tenacity, an intelligence officer in the real MI6 has a high degree of emotional intelligence, values teamwork and always has respect for the law…unlike Mr Bond!”

The MI6 chief admitted that he wants to recruit the ‘Best of Britain’ for the Secret Intelligence Service.

C added: “My ultimate goal is for more people to consider a career in MI6 and to get rid of the myth that it’s all about having studied at Oxford or Cambridge or having advanced hand-to-hand combat skills.

“What is true is that our work at MI6 is exciting, intellectually challenging and it matters.

“We are Britain’s secret frontline, operating upstream in the shadows to keep our friends, families and fellow countrymen and women safe. If you think you have the skills we need, come and join us!”
