The Goonies reunion: Will there be a sequel to The Goonies? Steven Spielberg opens up
Josh Gad’s new web series, Reunited Apart, brings together famous casts and crews from classic movies.
To kick off his new YouTube channel, he brought together the cast of The Goonies, as well as screenwriter Chris Columbus, who went on to direct Home Alone, and executive producer Steven Spielberg.
As well as them the cast came back together, including Corey Feldman, Josh Brolin and Sean Astin, and soundtrack singer Cyndi Lauper.
Gad hosted the reunion, and the group reminisced about some of their favourite things about the filming, even revealing some of the backstage gossip.
Will there be a sequel to The Goonies?
But there was one question about a sequel, which Spielberg was happy to field.
He said: “Every couple of years, we come up with an idea, but then it doesn’t hold water.
“The problem is the bar that all of you raised on this genre, I don’t think we’ve really successfully been able to find an idea that is better than The Goonies that we all made in the ‘80s.”
The film really did raise the bar of adventure films, and became a cult classic, making a profit of more than $100million (£80million) after its release.

The film was selected to be preserved in the USA National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 2017, as it is a “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” film.
TMZ reported in 2014 there was a sequel in the works, after Richard Donner, the original director, was reported to hinted to this strongly.
When asked if Spielberg was involved, Donner was reported saying “of course,” while also saying an idea came up.
He said: “Hopefully we’re going to get this done, period.
The Goonies cast reunited online
“Steven came up with the idea of doing a sequel after 30 years. You don’t do it without him.
“We’ve been trying for a long time, then he came up with another storyline and he’s right on.”
When asked whether the cast would return, he added: “God knows, it’s up to them. If they have any sense they will; if they don’t, they won’t.”
However, despite this comment, Spielberg is not convinced there has been a good enough story to warrant a sequel, and none of the stars at the reunion suggested there was anything in the works.
Stars Josh Brolin and Sean Astin went on to have huge careers
Reunions, reboots and sequels have been popular as of late, with 1980s movies such as Ghostbusters, Dune, Jurassic Park and Indiana Jones getting revamped.
Spielberg is working on a number of these projects, as well as new projects in the works, meaning it may be difficult to secure him for the returning moment for The Goonies.
While The Goonies is available to purchase online on YouTube or on DVD, fans can check out the Reunited Apart episode to see the cast reenact old scenes, for some lockdown nostalgia.
