Taika Waititi Star Wars movie: Two MAJOR reasons he won't exit over 'creative differences'
On May 4, Star Wars Day took place and Lucasfilm shared some big film news for the franchise. Thor Ragnarok director Taika Waititi will helm and co-write a new Star Wars movie for cinemas. While many fans celebrated, others joked that he will inevitably leave the project over “creative differences”. After all, the Kiwi is known for his zany improvisational humour.
As were The LEGO movie directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord who were fired from Solo: A Star Wars Story by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy in 2017 over said “creative differences”
Entertainment Weekly claimed the duo kept going off script and making the Han Solo prequel into more of a comedy – a method which Waititi has in common with the duo.
So with just two weeks of filming to go, they were dismissed as safe bet Ron Howard was parachuted in for reshoots.
Similarly, original Star Wars Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow was fired over “creative differences”, so can Waititi really hang on in there?

Taika Waititi Star Wars movie: Two MAJOR reasons he won’t exit over ‘creative differences’
Following the news the Solo directors were fired in autumn 2017, Waititi tweeted: “Lolz. I like to complete my films.
“I’d be fired within a week.”
In response, Kennedy said to Newshub a few months later: “I would love for him to direct a Star Wars movie.
“I think he has exactly the right sensibility.”
Taika Waititi won an Oscar for Jojo Rabbit this year

She added: “It was very exciting to see him step into the Marvel universe and do such an amazing job with Thor.”
And lo and behold, she has offered Waititi a Star Wars movie despite his tweet.
So the first major reason we think his vision will manifest without an exit is because Kennedy has seen how he breathed new life into the Thor franchise, which he was given a lot of free rein in.
Now that the hallowed Skywalker Saga is over, Disney have the opportunity to explore Star Wars through different angles and genres.

Presumably, the filmmaker’s concerns over creative freedom will have been discussed with Lucasfilm, before agreeing to such a project.
Secondly, let’s not forget that Waititi has already directed Star Wars.
The Oscar-winner helmed the final episode of The Mandalorian’s first season for Disney+.
He even played droid IG-11, in what was probably a test run for him directing Star Wars.
Having seen the episode, it clearly has his creative stamp on it with the opening comic scene between the two Scout Troopers missing a target and bickering.
But the episode was still very much in line with the tone of the previous seven episodes of The Mandalorian, without going too zany.
Presumably, his first Star Wars movie will be similar in tone; respecting the franchise while unleashing something new too. And no doubt, having a co-screenwriter in Krysty Wilson-Cairns is a way of reining him in.
If anything, a full-on Star Wars comedy from the director sounds like something to be desired for Lucasfilm; keeping the franchise fresh and exciting in the Disney age post-Skywalker Saga.
