Burnley vs Newcastle LIVE: Express Sport brings you all the latest team news, updates and analysis from Turf Moor

89: Burnley almost double their advantage, but it’s another good stop by Rob Elliot, who gets down low to his left to keep out Ashley Barnes.

87: Jonjo Shelvey arrives late to hit a cutback from Gayle, but he’s scuffed it straight at Pope.

86: Time ticking away for Newcastle. In truth, they’ve never really looked like scoring against a well organised Burnley.

83: Close! Murphy does very well to bundle through a few challenges before laying it off to Joselu, who strikes narrowly past the post.

Rafa makes his third and final change with Dwight Gayle on for Diame.

80: Right, Newcastle have ten minutes to salvage something. They might need to throw caution to the wind because Burnley look pretty comfortable.

79: Jeff Hendrick has scored two goals in his last four Premier League games, as many as he managed in his previous 35 games. Rafa makes another change with Matt Ritchie heading off for Jacob Murphy.

76: Substitution for Burnley. Ashley Westwood replaces Steven Defour. The Toon also make a change with Isaac Hayden on for Ayoze Perez.

BURNLEY 1-0 NEWCASTLE – HENDRICK

74: OH. MY. GOD. We’ve actually had a goal. I’ve basically forgotten how to type!

Jeff Hendrick tucks the ball home at the back post following Gudmundsson’s cross.

Credit should go to Jack Cork, whose fizzed effort was parried away by Elliot in the build-up.

Looks like Newcastle’s poor Monday night record is set to continue.

73: Newcastle just can’t keep possession, and it’s giving Burnley a huge boost. Jack Cork goes for goal from distance, blazing just over with a deflection on the way.

70: When is Sean Dyche going to stick Sam Vokes on? There’s plenty of crosses peppering the Newcastle penalty area but nobody there to meet them.

The Clarets win a corner after Steven Defour’s strike was deflected wide, but the delivery is terrible and Lejeune clears.

67: This is so hard to watch folks. I feel like everyone who actually manages to watch the 90 minutes should be given refunds, and perhaps an award of some nature.

63: Burnley are starting to clock through the gears, and the crowd is responding. It’s gone up a couple of decibels as Sam Vokes begins warming up on the touchline. Yellow card for Jack Cork for a pull on Matt Ritchie.

60: Joselu is manfully trying to walk this one off, but as we all know, that’s enough to keep you sidelined for a month.

57: Ouch! Joselu is down, and I’m afraid to tell you that he’s clutching his crown jewels. Pope takes a big swing to clear the ball and connects with the striker’s plums on the way through. New balls please! Easily the most entertaining moment of the match.

54: Bloody hell, two chances?! We’re really being treated now. James Tarkowski comes close to breaking the deadlock with header at the back post, but it’s straight at Elliot.

51: A shot on target, this is not a drill! Nick Pope makes a fine save after Ayoze Perez weaved his way through a couple of challenges before sending a curling effort from just outside the area.

48: The game’s stopped before It could really start as Jack Cork goes down as Diame treads on his toes. He’s alright.

BURNLEY 0-0 NEWCASTLE

45: And we’re back underway for another 45 minutes of thrills, spills and bellyaches. Fingers crossed we’re treated to some entertainment. No changes at the break.

TWITTER ROUND-UP

Jamie: Joselu can’t hold up/link the play to save his life! If we need a big man up top get Mitro up top and he’s not even in the squad!

Matthew: Whoever decided to have this match televised is probably fearing for their job right now.

Steve: Two teams devoid of any quality in the final third. Drab drab game.

HT: I refuse to believe that Roberto Martinez has travelled all this way to watch Steven Defour. I reckon he’s heard there’s an vacant manager position at Goodison Park…

BURNLEY 0-0 NEWCASTLE

HT: Not quite sure what we did to deserve that 60 seconds of added time. It felt like an eternity. It’s level at the break and certainly won’t live long in the memory.

ONE MINUTED ADDED TIME

44: Newcastle seeing out the half better. And by that I mean they’ve had more possession. No chances though.

The Toon weathered that difficult first 15 minutes and have looked fairly comfortable since.

41: I’d love to provide you with an exciting update, but literally nothing has happened aside from Atsu’s long ranger striking Lowton before it could do any damage.

38: This is not one for the neutral. It’s a very tight game between a side who are struggling to win to win at home, and a side who struggle to win away.

35: Chance for Ashley Barnes inside the box from a deflected cross but he heads wide under pressure from Manquillo. Should probably have done better with that.

Hedrick and Diame clash heads but it’s the Burnley man who’s left on the deck. Rafa uses the pause in play to offload some instructions on his players. Looked like it went in one ear and out the other as he barked at Perez.

32: Oooooshhhhh, that was mightily close. Robbie Brady’s cross/shot almost sneaks in but Elliot does well to gather.

29: Burnley whip a free-kick into the box from deep but Tarkowski can only send it into the side netting from a tight angle. Decent chance.

26: Bit naughty from Brady, who goes in late on Joselu. Mike Dean has a think before keeping his cards in his pocket. Joselu gets up and produces the biggest spit I’ve ever witnessed. That was rank.

23: Newcastle might want to stop these high crosses into the box. Atsu, Perez, Ritchie and even Joselu aren’t really a match for Burnley’s aerial strength.

20: Right on cue Jonjo Shelvey swipes at one across his body but it’s straight down Pope’s throat. Won’t be too many chances tonight, one moment of magic could be decisive. Either that or Mike Dean could do something insane…

17: Excellent long pass by Shelvey down the right and Yedlin races onto it. He crosses at the second attempt but Pope gathers. Lots of ‘nearly moments’ so far, but nothing to trouble either keeper.

15: Burnley don’t mess around with it on the flanks. They get the ball, and ping it in the box. Elliot anticipates the latest cross with Barnes lurking.

12: Great run by Atsu down the left and he forces the Magpies’ first corner of the evening. The Toon supporters behind the goal are screaming for a spot-kick, but Mike Dean isn’t interested. Rightly so.

9: I’ve watched Newcastle away from St James’ Park a few times this season, and they have shown great ability to absorb pressure and cause problems on the break. The early signs suggest Rafa’s not tinkered with that formula for tonight’s clash.

6: Burnley are dar the sharper of the two sides in the opening stages. The Toon are a little sloppy in possession. Shelvey’s given it away twice already.

Brady delivers a deep outswinging corner and Hendrick’s header is deflected wide.

3: Newcastle are backed by around 2,500 travelling supporters in a sold-out away end. Great effort on a Monday night.

Big opportunity in the opening minute. A long ball forward drops to Hendrick, who finds some space before firing wide.

BURNLEY 0-0 NEWCASTLE

1: And we’re off! All the stats are pointing towards a 1-0 Burnley win, but I’ll plump for a 1-1 myself. Warning: I’ve been correct twice in about 50 games this season.

RAFA NOT GETTING CARRIED AWAY

19:50: Rafa’s not getting carried away.

Benitez and his players head into tonight’s match sitting in eighth place in the Premier League table just five months after securing an immediate return to the top flight.

But as he prepares for tonight’s game, the 57-year-old knows there are tougher tests to come.

Asked if his team has exceeded expectations so far, Benitez said: “I could say yes, but not because I was not expecting the team to do well, it’s because maybe you were expecting the other teams to do better, and then you could be in another position.

“We have had some games in which maybe we deserved even more, some games where we could have conceded, but we have have chances in some games to get more points, so it could be even better.

“I am really pleased with our position, but still, I think we have to wait until January to be jumping because we are very happy.”

THANKS, BUT NO THANKS

19:40: Look away now if we’ve got any rogue Everton fans reading tonight.

Sean Dyche, who was linked with the Leicester job before it was given to Claude Puel, is considered one of the frontrunners with bookmakers for the post at Goodison Park.

But the gravel-voiced tactician has distanced himself from the gig, and says he’s heard nothing from Everton.

“There has been no contact from any clubs. I’ve said it a few times with the various clubs that have been mentioned – you’re always flattered because it recognises the work that myself, my players and staff do,” he said.

“You’re flattered by the fact some of your work is recognised. It’s other people’s stories, it’s not mine. It’s right that I get asked about it. It’s the yin and the yang. You get praise, but you lose three games and then you’re getting slaughtered.”

TWITTER ROUND-UP

Basil: Finally an appetising Monday Night Football fixture! Looking forward to a proper football match.

Andrea: Geordie living in Burnley…split allegiance this evening.

David: Mo Diame playing in midfield is his best position. No Chris Wood for Burnley is good news. Very good news, actually.

BON ANNIVERSAIRE

19:30: Burnley boss Sean Dyche celebrates five years in charge today.

He’s twice steered the Clarets out of the Championship and established them in the Premier League, but should he be looking elsewhere? We’ll get on to that in a second.

BATTLE OF THE BEARDS

19:25: Who’s doing Movember? I can definitely see Rafa Benitez and Sean Dyche raising a lot of cash if they went head-to-head on who could grow the best mustache.

Dyche joked in his pre-match press conference that his facial hair is better than the Spaniard’s.

However, when asked about the Clarets manager’s comments, Benitez replied with a smile: “I don’t have too much beard, it was just a long time ago that I did it. I think his is much better than mine, so that’s fine.”

That round goes to Dyche.

THE BIG NUMBERS

19:20: Still can’t decide who’s going to win tonight? Perhaps these conflicting and confusing statistics will help…

*The two most recent meetings came in the 2014-15 Premier League season and were both drawn.

*All four of Burnley’s Premier League home wins in 2017 have been by a 1-0 scoreline.

*Newcastle have lost nine consecutive top-flight matches on a Monday. All nine have come away from home, with the Magpies failing to score on seven occasions.

Helpful? I thought not.

TWITTER ROUND-UP

Craig: Mike Dean doing tonight’s game, hopefully he makes a drab fixture on paper entertaining.

Rory: I hope Newcastle win. Burnley are a little boring at home this season.

Brian: What a great way to celebrate Halloween with the horror show that is Burnley vs Newcastle.

NEWCASTLE TEAM NEWS

19:10: And now let’s look at what Rafa’s done. The Spanish boss has made one change to the team who beat Crystal Palace a St James’ Park.

Mo Diame is preferred to Isaac Hayden, who drops to the bench.

It’s the normal attacking trio of Joselu, Christian Atsu and Matt Ritchie who have the job of breaking down Burnley’s defence. Easier said than done…

BURNLEY TEAM NEWS

19:05: Sean Dyche has made two changes from the side who were beaten 3-0 by Manchester City.

The tireless Ashley Barnes and the unspellable Johann Berg Gudmundsson start ahead of Chris Wood (injured) and Sam Vokes (bench).

THE FORM

18:50: Rafa Benitez’s side have really enjoyed themselves since returning to the top-flight.

The Magpies have only suffered one defeat in their last seven Premier League games, and boast the fourth best defensive record in the division.

Meanwhile Burnley’s six-match unbeaten league run came to an end against Manchester City last weekend, when they failed to register a single shot on target.

EVENING

18:45: Welcome to our LIVE coverage of the Burnley vs Newcastle from a very chilly Turf Moor.

It’s a full 7 degrees in Lancashire, but I highly doubt we’ll see Sean Dyche’s side wearing gloves tonight.

Made of tougher stuff you see…

Don’t worry, you’ve not inadvertently tuned into a fashion blog, we’re definitely here for some Premier League action.

But we’re not talking about a relegation scrap. No sir. A victory could see both sides leapfrog Liverpool into sixth position after 10 league games!

BURNLEY vs NEWCASTLE – PREVIEW

Burnley have doubts over top scorer Chris Wood (hamstring) and fellow forward Sam Vokes (abdominal strain).

The door could open for Nahki Wells, who is close to making his debut after a foot injury, but Jonathan Walters and Dean Marney (both knee) remain out.

Newcastle striker Dwight Gayle will return to the squad after recovering from a calf problem.

Manager Rafael Benitez has only one absentee, with defender Paul Dummett still recovering from a hamstring injury.

Last season: No corresponding fixture

Last five league matches: Burnley D D W D L; Newcastle W L D D W

Top scorers (all competitions): Chris Wood (Burnley) 5; Mato Joselu, Aleksandar Mitrovic & Jamaal Lascelles (Newcastle) 2
