Avengers Endgame: Thanos death plot a 'lost opportunity' as star speaks out on theory

Avengers Endgame saw the Avengers unite to defeat their toughest enemy yet: Thanos (played by Josh Brolin).

With Thanos in possession of the Infinity Stones, it was almost impossible for the superheroes to conquer him and reverse the effects of the Snap, whereby he cancelled 50 per cent of the population of the universe with one click of his fingers.

Before Endgame was released, however, a murmur about how he could be beaten started bubbling up online in fan forums and on social media.

Some fans speculated, and continue to speculate, as to why Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) didn’t shrink down to minuscule size and find his way, ahem, inside Thanos through a certain unsavoury route before super-sizing himself and thus exploding the villain into a thousand pieces.

Now, Ant-Man himself Rudd has spoken out on the theory which could’ve potentially saved the Avengers a lot of time, energy and pain.

During an appearance on Hot Ones, the actor paused thoughtful when asked for his opinion on the matter.

“I consider it a lost opportunity,” he sighed.

Rudd previously laughed about the theory on The Graham Norton Show.

“A lot of people have asked me recently if I shrink down and go… into Thanos, in a certain orifice, and then grow giant size,” he explained. “But why not the ear or the nose? Why does it have to be [that]?!”

Meanwhile, Executive Producer Trinh Tran addressed the idea herself before Avengers: Endgame was released, sounding amused as she called the (admittedly very strange) theory “crazy”.

“One [theory] I read has been interesting,” she said. “I won’t say much but it involved Thanos and Ant-Man.

“It’a crazy, but it’s a lot of fun to see how people are coming up with crazy theories,” she added.

Elsewhere, Rudd also responded to The Irishman director Martin Scorsese’s criticism of Marvel movies after he said they were “not cinema”.

“Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks,” the legendary director said at a press conference, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.”

When asked about the remarks by NME, Rudd said simply:  “I love martin Scorsese, I love his movies. I can’t wait to see The Irishman.

“I thought I was gonna be asked this at some point and I have been,” he admitted.

“I think it’s really just… it seems to be what the state of interviews are now and I have no opinion about it.”

Rudd first joined the MCU as Scott Lang/Ant-Man in 2015’s solo movie Ant-Man, going on to appear in Captain America: Civil War and And-Man and the Wasp.

Earlier this year, he joined the likes of Brolin, Robert Downey Jr, Zoe Saldana, Brie Larson, Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans in Avengers: Endgame.
