Avengers Endgame writer on THAT Captain America lifting Thor’s hammer Mjolnir PLOT HOLE

It was one of the biggest moments in Avengers Endgame. Thanos was about to kill Thor in that final battle, but then Captain America was deemed worthy to lift the Asgardian hammer Mjolnir. With Norse weapon in hand, good guy Steve Rogers proceeded to smack the villain several times while bringing down lightning from the heavens. However, Marvel fans have pointed out that Thor could summon lightning even without Mjolnir and that the Asgardian had this power apart from the hammer, which was destroyed in Thor Ragnarok.

Well, now one half of the Avengers Endgame screenwriting duo has spoken out on this apparent plot hole.

Speaking with Slash Film, Christopher Markus said: “There was certainly a debate at one point because particularly in Ragnarok, it establishes that Thor can summon the lightning without the hammer.

“I think Odin even says, ‘It was never the hammer.’

“And yet Cap summons the lightning with the hammer.

“You get to those things and you’re like, ‘It’s too awesome not to do it! We’ll talk about it later.’”

So yes, it is a plot hole, but seeing Cap wield Mjolnir was too incredible not to do, so of course, they had to break that rule.

Fans will remember that the Avengers had a hammer lifting competition in Age of Ultron and Mjolnir moved a little bit when Cap tried.

The Russo said: “He didn’t know that until that moment in [Avengers: Age of Ultron] when he tried to pick it up.”

As for why Captain America chose not to, it comes down to his humility. Which if anything, just goes to show how super worthy he is to wield Mjolnir.

The filmmakers added: “Cap’s sense of character and the humility and the sort of deference to Thor’s ego, Cap in that moment realising he can move the hammer decides not to.”

So, in a nutshell, Captain America was always worthy.
