Bird Box is the latest horror flick to hit Netflix and is terrifying viewers with its post-apocalyptic outlook on the world. Sandra Bullock stars and gives a stellar performance as Malorie, who along with her two children attempt to escape from a mysterious entity that forces people to kill themselves if they look directly at it.

The entity – or monster – is integral to the plotline but the audience never gets a glimpse of the creature.

This is done on purpose, to heighten the tension and drama in the movie and so the audience can use their imagination to conjure up a creature more terrifying than if it was seen on camera.

What is Bird Box’s deleted scene?

The new horror film makes the decision to never show the terrifying creatures.

However, Sandra Bullock claims there is a Bird Box deleted scene that actually shows us one of the creatures.

The monsters very nearly made it into the film and according to screenwriter Eric Heisserer, one of the film’s producers felt at least one of the creatures should be shown.

The screenwriter told Bloody Disgusting: “There was a time when one of the producers was like, ‘No, you have to see something at some point’ and forced me to write essentially a nightmare sequence where Malorie experiences one in that house.”

Bullock saids: “It was a green man with a horrific baby face. It was snake-like and I was like, ‘I don’t want to see it when it first happens. Just bring it into the room. We’ll shoot the scene.’

“I turn and he’s like [growling at me]. It’s making me laugh. It was just a long fat baby.”

But the scene never made it into the final cut.

Director Susanne Bier said in the same interview: “It so easily becomes funny.

“We actually shot that and spent a lot of energy on, but every time I saw it, I was like this is not going to be tense.”

The only visuals we get of the monster in the film are the sketches drawn by Gary, who is one of the infected who is able to look at the monsters without killing himself.

Bier said the decision to keep the monsters off the screen was the better choice.

She added: “Whatever those beings are, they tap into your deepest fear. Everybody’s deepest fear is going to be different from the other person.

“I think to suddenly take upon a concrete shape in order to illustrate that becomes weak.

“Where he conceit is really strong, then trying to illustrate it is kind of almost meaningless. So it would have been the wrong decision.”

Bird Box is streaming now on Netflix.
