How old do you have to be to see Birds of Prey?
Birds of Prey has been given a 15 rating by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC.)
This means no one under the age of 15 is allowed to see the film, even if they are accompanied by an adult.
According to the BBFC, the film contains “strong violence, injury detail, language, sexual threat,” which may make it inappropriate for some viewers.
However, in order to help parents work out if their teenagers could withstand the events of the film, the BBFC also offers information to specify moments which could be upsetting.
In the ratings info, the BBFC states: “It is implied that a villain peels off his victims’ faces with a knife. A woman breaks a man’s legs.
“There are regular scenes of violence, in which bats, crossbows, knives and guns are used, often with resultant bloody detail.
“A man is seen to hold skinned flesh from a victim’s face. A man explodes in a shower of limbs and blood.
“There is use of strong language (‘f**k’, ‘motherf**ker’), as well as other terms such as ‘bitch’, ‘slut’ and ‘ho’.
“A man tries to bundle a drunken woman into a van. A villain makes a man cut the dress from a terrified woman, and forces her to dance in her underwear.
“There is moderate threat, and implied drug misuse. A crudely drawn erect penis is seen.”
Is Birds of Prey suitable for teenagers?
As is always the case with films, different issues shown within them may affect children in different ways.
In the case of Birds of Prey, the film’s ratings info, as explained above, contains specific details which children could find upsetting.
The BBFC’s ratings info “provides comprehensive information on exactly why a film or video has been given a particular category.
“All the issues are discussed in detail and parents in particular can use this information to make informed decisions when choosing viewing material for their children.”
As a result, parents should make an informed decision based on what could upset their children specifically.
Another option for parents is to watch the film first, without their children, to determine whether it is appropriate for them to attend.
Birds of Prey is just shy of two hours, so parents may find this is a suitable way to work out if their children should see it.
And, given it has had a huge number of positive reviews, it may be the movie is ideal watching for a night out.
Birds of Prey is in cinemas on February 7
