Black Widow movie delay: Marvel fans call for Disney+ launch but there is one BIG issue

Yesterday, Disney announced that Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, which was set for UK release on May 1, has been postponed indefinitely as the coronavirus pandemic spreads. The film isn’t the only production for Marvel Studios to be affected, with Disney+ shows The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, WandaVision and Loki plus 2021 movie Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings seeing production put on hold. Since the film and TV shows share the same universe post-Avengers Endgame, new release dates will have to be carefully planned for after the outbreak dies down.

And with Black Widow’s delay, Marvel fans have been calling on the House of Mouse to launch the film on Disney+.

After all, the streaming service launches in the UK next week and already has straight-to-digital titles like the live-action remake of Lady and the Tramp.

One fan tweeted: “Just drop Black Widow on Disney plus tomorrow or something.”

While another argued: “Marvel has enough cash. They should put Black Widow out on the streaming platform instead of theatres and spread some cheer that way.”

These blockbusters cost hundreds of millions of dollars to make and the streaming service’s subscriptions are unlikely to make that back in the same way.

After all, Disney+ is only £5.99 for all the content which will see multiple people viewing a single account.

Comparing that to the money to be made from individual cinema tickets that can’t be shared and the difference is astronomical.

With The Eternals set for a November release, presumably, Black Widow will hit cinemas from late summer, if not early autumn.
