Boris Johnson has revealed his shock at the cardiac arrest suffered by Christian Eriksen during Denmark’s Euro 2020 match against Finland on Saturday.

In a statement released via his spokesperson, the Prime Minister has said that his thoughts are with the midfielder and his family.

Eriksen collapsed just before half-time and English referee Anthony Taylor immediately stopped the game.

Eriksen was given CPR before being taken to hospital where he is now stable.

The match was suspended for nearly two hours but the players returned to the field once they had heard that Eriksen was awake.

It is believed that Eriksen spoke to his team-mates before play resumed.

The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said: “The Prime Minister was shocked by what happened yesterday. His thoughts are with Christian Eriksen and his family.

“He is very thankful for the quick-thinking actions of officials and paramedics.

“He thought the response of the players and fans in the stadium was exemplary and showed sport at its best.”

The Danish FA issued a statement this morning to update on Eriksen’s health.

They emphasised that Eriksen has spoken to his team-mates.

He remains in hospital and will undergo further medical examinations.

It read: “Latest news: This morning we have spoken to Christian Eriksen, who has sent his greetings to his teammates.

“His condition is stable, and he continues to be hospitalised for further examination.

“The team and staff of the national team has received crisis assistance and will continue to be there for each other after yesterday’s incident.

“We would like to thank everyone for the heartfelt greetings to Christian Eriksen from fans, players, the Royal Families from both Denmark and England, international associations, clubs etc.

“We encourage everyone to send their greetings to the Danish FA, where we will make sure they are all passed on to Christian and his family.”

Play was suspended for around two hours while a decision was made on when it would resume.

The match restarted at around 7:45pm after the Denmark players had been reassured of Eriksen’s well being.

Finland scored the only goal of the game soon after the restart.

Joel Pohjanpalo squeezed a header through Kasper Schmeichel’s grasp.

It was Finland’s first win at a major international football tournament.

Prime Minister Johnson is currently at the G7 summit in Cornwall with other world leaders.
