Cowboys owner Jerry Jones admits he’s taking a RISK on Jason Garrett for next season
The 76-year-old passed up the chance to extend Garrett’s deal as he looks to add a sixth Super Bowl trophy to Cowboys cabinet.
When it was revealed the Cowboys would be allowing Garrett to enter the final year of his contract the coach admitted he was not worried about the team’s decision.
And the same goes for Jones, who claimed he performs better what there is “risk involved”.
“I do my best work without a net. I really do,” Jones said.
“I’m better with a little risk involved. In essence, there’s a little bit of no net here.”
Because the Cowboys have not extended the deal does not mean Jones’ support for Garrett has wained on the contrary he reiterated his support for the current head coach.
“He has never lost a team, ever… That’s very impressive,” Jones said.
“Hopefully that can come together, we get him a Super Bowl and he’ll be maybe the longest-tenured coach in the history of the Cowboys.”
Jones, who bought the Cowboys in 1989, was attending his 30th NFL Scouting Combine as owner of the organisation.
And the owner was clear about his desire to bring the Lombardi Trophy back to Dallas.
“This my 30th Combine and I don’t have 30 more. I’m running out of Combines,” he said.
“So it’s more urgent than it was sitting here visiting with you 20 years ago.
“We need to grab this while it’s here.”
Two keys player who may help the Cowboys achieve his dream are defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence and quarterback Dak Prescott, who are both in contract negotiations.
Jones revealed there “was good communication” with Lawrence’s representatives, when they met on Friday, but would not elaborate any further.
And regarding their franchise quarterback, Jones would only confirm that discussions are taking place.
“We’re in the activity of negotiating his contract,” Jones said.
“We have several in that category. There’s nothing notable about where we are or aren’t. It’s business as usual.”
