Deepika Padukone: xXx Return of Xander Cage actress to appear in Hollywood movie remake

Deepika Padukone announced her next project on social media today, telling her 43 million Instagram followers she would be taking one of the leading roles in the adaptation of Hollywood’s The Intern. “Thrilled to present my next! The Indian adaptation of #TheIntern,” she said. The xXx Return of Xander Cage actress also confirmed when the new movie would be released, adding: “A 2021 release! See you at the movies!”

Padukone will be taking on the part originally played by Anne Hathaway in Nancy Meyers’ film.

Her co-star, set to step into Robert De Niro’s shoes, is Rishi Kapoor.

In a statement, the xXx Return of Xander Cage star enthused about how excited she was to star in the adaptation.

“The Intern is an imitate, relationship-driven film, set in and around the workplace; a story that I believe is very relevant to the present-day social and cultural environment,” she said.

Though she’s very sceptical about her senior intern at first, the pair soon start to have a positive impact on each other’s lives.

Not only is Padukone starring in the Indian remake, but she’s also credited as a producer, alongside Sunir Kheterpal.

She made her debut as a producer on her latest project, Chhapaak [Splash], which is based on the life story of Laxmi Agarwal, who survived an acid attack at the age of 15 and has gone on to become an activist, campaigning for the rights of acid attack victims.

She previously told Variety: “I’ve turned producer because I want to enable some of the films that I do. I’m not doing it because Im a woman.”

“At one of these press conferences, they spoke about Splash being a female-centric film, for example,” Padukone continued. “No, I’m not doing this film because it is female-centric.

“It really makes the film small. Sometimes you want to have more skin in the game; you want to be more involved.”

Elsewhere, Padukone is set to reprise her role as Serena Unger in the follow-up to xXx Return of Xander Cage, which was released in 2017.

The release date for xXx4 has yet to be confirmed, but actor Vin Diesel confirmed he and Padukone were headed to a meeting about the next movie a year ago.
