eBay: 50p coin sold on Sunday for £650 – do you have one of the Battle of Hastings coins?
A 50p coin has sold on eBay for a huge sum of money.
The Battle of Hastings 50p coin, which is one of the rarest pieces on the UK, sold for £650 on Sunday.
Sold by seller “louicuthber_2” from Newport, the coin went for the whopping sum after fours bids were made on it.
The coin has been in circulation, and was minted in 2016.
The seller said of the coin in the eBay listing: “Good condition 25 th rarest coin in Britain battle of Hastings plus another rare 50 p the Battle of Britain both collectors items very valuable!” [sic]
The Royal Mint said of the coin: “To mark 950 years since the Battle of Hastings, the date that made history, The Royal Mint released this commemorative 50p coin.
“John Bergdahl’s medieval composition expertly captures the essence of the period.”
Many may recognise the design of the coin as being from the Bayeux Tapestry.
The tapestry commemorates the battle in 1066, which is often considered the beginning the Norman conquest of England.
But how rare is the coin really?
Change checker give the coin a scarcity rating of one, meaning it is in fact a common coin.
There are 6,700,000 in circulation in the UK currently.
However, that hasn’t stopped one collector parting with a hefty pile of cash for the coin.
Another coin selling for a large amount of money is the Kew Gardens 50p.
There are only 210,000 in Britain, so collectors are always very keen to get their hands on them.
This coin has a scarcity rating of 100 on Change Checker, the highest rating possible.
