***WARNING: FROZEN 2 SPOILERS AHEAD***

Frozen 2 follows Elsa (played by Idina Menzel), her sister Anna (Kristen Bell), Kristoff (Jonathan Groff), Sven the reindeer and Olaf (Josh Gad) as they head into the magical forest in search of Northundra and answers as to why mysterious forces are wreaking havoc on the kingdom of Arendelle. Still, while the adventure is a go, it’s Elsa’s love life which remains the hot topic at the forefront of fans’ minds.

Ever since Disney‘s first Frozen became a global phenomenon and Let It Go spent a staggering 70 weeks in the UK charts, there’s been focus on Elsa’s sexuality.

The hit single, performed by Menzel, secured its place in fans’ hearts and went on to become an instant LGBTQ+ anthem, the lyrics conjuring a powerful coming out message.

In 2016, years after the movie was released, #GiveElsaAGirlfriend went viral online, highlighting fans’ campaign to get filmmakers to do just that in the sequel.

So, did their dream come true? Did Elsa get girlfriend and come out in the second film?

Unfortunately for #GiveElsaAGirlfriend backers, Frozen 2 leaves the matter of Elsa’s love life out of the story once again.

Instead, the movie centres around her ongoing struggle to understand her own identity, in particular, her search for the source of her magic powers.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, director Jennifer Lee explained the situation surrounding Elsa’s romantic relationships, or lack thereof.

It turns out she and her co-director Chris Buck believed Elsa wasn’t ready for a relationship at all as she continues to deal with her own self-discovery.

“For this film, we spent a lot of time journaling and we said we took these pretty intense personality tests [for each character],” she revealed.

“We found this is a woman who wasn’t ready for a relationship at all.

“She’s carrying a lot of pressure and the weight of her kingdom on her shoulders and struggling with this call for her powers,” the filmmaker continued. “That’s where she was, so for us, it really hadn’t come up in terms of what fit with where the story was going.

“And we knew the end we wanted for her. So it just didn’t fit with where she was in her life.”

However, there could still be hope for those wanting Elsa to have a coming out moment on screen.

Lee didn’t totally shut down the idea of Elsa’s love life being addressed in the future, admitting: “I don’t know if it’ll fit in the future.

“We haven’t asked that question, and I’m not stretching past Frozen 2 about what happens to these characters in their lives!” she laughed. “But it’s just not where she was now.”

Meanwhile, Frozen 2 producer Peter Del Vecho also spoke out about why they chose to leave Elsa’s sexuality ambiguous in the second movie, telling Radio Times, like the first film, the movie wasn’t about the female characters’ romantic entanglements.

“That’s just not part of the journey of the story we’re telling,” he said. “What’s really important is she’s really, for three years she has been queen, she doesn’t really understand why she’s the only human in the world that has these powers, or what she’s meant to do with these powers.

“Her journey isn’t a romantic one,” he continued. “It’s really trying to discover who she is and what her purpose is.

“And the core relationship, just like in the first film, is between Anna and Elsa. We want that again to be the strong relationship of the family of the movie.”

Frozen 2 is in cinemas now.
