Guess which hotly-anticipated movie is on track for MASSIVE losses after dire opening
Charlie’s Angels’ 2019 reboot has tanked after opening in the US last week. With a budget of $48 million, the Sony project debuted to $8.6 million in North America. Disappointing overseas figures haven’t helped either, launching with $19.2 million, just $7.7 million of which came from China’s release.
If the opening days are anything to go by, Elizabeth Banks’ reboot of the classic franchise is on for some hefty losses.
It doesn’t look any better when compared to its competitors either, going up against Ford v Ferrari and Midway in the US.
According to Forbes, Charlie’s Angels took just $3.15 million on Thursday and Friday, while Ford v Ferrari took $30 million and Midway, which came out the week before, took $8.8 million.
The new film’s takings stack up poorly next to those of the 2000 version and its sequel, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle (2003), both of which starred Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu and Drew Barrymore.

The first earned $40 million in its opening weekend and a final worldwide box office gross of $264 million.
This was against a budget of $75 million.
The second dipped slightly, but still grossed $259 million in total with a budget of $120 million.
Having brought the much-loved franchise back to the big screen 16 years after the release of McG’s Charlie’s Angels 2, Director Banks, who also wrote the screenplay and starred in the movie, made light of it’s dire opening weekend on Twitter.
Charlie’s Angels first secured its place in fans hearts back in late ‘70s, starring Kate Jackson, Farrah Fawcett and Jaclyn Smith.
Meanwhile, the new take, despite tanking at the box office so far, has received mixed reviews.
It’s currently scored at 58 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes but has an audience score of 81 per cent.
Banks recently defended 2019’s Charlie’s Angels against critics complaining there shouldn’t have been another reboot.
