How did Elizabeth II become Queen? Family DRAMA is true reason behind 66 year reign

Queen Elizabeth II, 91, is the Queen of the United Kingdom, as well as Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

She is the longest serving monarch in British history, having been on the throne for 66 years.

However, she was never expected to be Queen as a child, as television series The Crown reveals.

How old was the Queen when she was crowned?

Queen Elizabeth II became queen at the age of 25, on 6 February 1952, the day her father, King George VI, died.

Her coronation took place over a year later, on June 2 1953, at Westminster Abbey.

However, she was never expected to be queen, and it was in unusual circumstances that she assumed the role. 

When Elizabeth was born, she was third in line to the British throne.

She was behind her grandfather George V, her uncle King Edward VIII, and her father King George VI.

When her grandfather passed away in 1936, she became second in line to the throne.

However, it was expected she would move further down the line of succession if her uncle Edward VIII, who became king the same year of his father’s death, had children.

This all changed when Edward VIII abdicated after just a few months, following a row over his plans to marry divorcee Wallis Simpson, whom the country disapproved of. 

Consequently, Elizabeth’s father George VI became king, making Elizabeth heir apparent at just 10 years old – and later queen. 

It was revealed earlier this week Princess Margaret’s words to Elizabeth II upon learning she would be queen.

The exchange happened on 10th December 1936, which began as an ordinary day for Princess Elizabeth, who was 10 years old at the time. 

She had just finished her swimming lesson, and was preparing to write up her notes from the class.

However, she was disturbed by sounds outside – she asked what was happening, and was told her uncle, Edward VIII, had abdicated and her father, George VI, had become king. What do you think Princess Margaret said?
