Inception ending EXPLAINED: Leonardo DiCaprio doesn't understand it but Michael Caine DOES

It’s been bugging people for twenty years. Christopher Nolan’s extraordinary mind-bender ends on the most tantalising tease. The spinning top has been used throughout the film to distinguish between reality and virtual reality. The final scene cuts just as it appears to start wobbling. Or does it? Does it even matter? Michael Caine doesn’t think so. He’s sure he knows exactly what is going on.

Inception will celebrate its 20th Anniversary this year.

Incredibly, people are still talking about the concepts explored in the movie as well as that extraordinary ending.

In a new podcast interview for Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, DiCaprio brought it up all over again.

He told host Marc Maron on the WTF podcast: “I have no idea … It depends on the eye of the beholder, I guess.”

“You’re just focused on your character, man. When it came to Chris Nolan and his mind and how that was all pieced together, everyone was trying to constantly put that puzzle together.”

The theory grew that if that spinning wheel wobbles or falls, this indicates reality because it spins indefinitely in a dream world.

The film ends with DiCaprio’s character Dom Cobb setting it spinning but choosing not to see what happens. Instead, he goes into the garden to be with his children, purposefully turning his back on the toy.

This seems to be indicating that he is happy to stay in that world, whether it is real or not.

Nolan expanded on this concept: “The way the end of that film worked, Leonardo DiCaprio’s character Cobb — he was off with his kids, he was in his own subjective reality.

“He didn’t really care any more, and that makes a statement: perhaps all levels of reality are valid.”

Michael Caine, however, cut through all the decades of theories with one very simple and powerful explanation.

Caine played Professor Miles, Cobb’s mentor, and he thinks it is actually extremely simple to know what is going on.

He said: “When I got the script of Inception, I was a bit puzzled by it, and I said to [Nolan], ‘I don’t understand where the dream is.’

“I said, ‘When is it the dream and when is it reality?’ He said, ‘Well, when you’re in the scene it’s reality.’ So, get that – if I’m in it, it’s reality. If I’m not in it, it’s a dream.”

So everything hinges over whether Miles is with Cobb in that final scene, whatever the spinning wheel does or doesn’t do.

Fans, of course, know that they are both in that final scene, which makes it reality. Cobb gets his happy ending, after all.

Nolan said that to him it did not matter either, but he accepts why audiences need an answer: “The question of whether that’s a dream or whether it’s real is the question I’ve been asked most about any of the films I’ve made.

“The point is, objectively, it matters to the audience in absolute terms: even though when I’m watching, it’s fiction, a sort of virtual reality… It matters to people because that’s the point about reality. Reality matters.”

The simple answer is… if you want something explained, go ask Caine.
