James Bond: No Time To Die’s original plot was truly BIZARRE as Cary Fukunaga reveals all
The troubled production on the latest James Bond movie has seen its script go through a number of different forms. After Danny Boyle and his Trainspotting screenwriter John Hodge left the project, producer Barbara Broccoli went back to regular Bond movie scribes Neal Purvis and Robert Wade whose script had been shelved. What has now become No Time To Die is very much a sequel to 2015’s Spectre and a conclusion to Daniel Craig’s 16-year tenure as 007.
However, new director Cary Fukunaga has now revealed how originally he had an idea for the first two-thirds of No Time To Die to be set inside Bond’s head.
Speaking with Interview Magazine, the 42-year-old said: “I swear to god, I had an idea that this movie could all be taking place inside the villain’s lair from the last film.
“There’s this scene where a needle goes into James Bond’s head, which is supposed to make him forget everything, and then he miraculously escapes by a watch bomb.
“And then he and Léa blow up the place, and go on to save the day.”

The No Time To Die director added: “I was like, ‘What if everything up until the end of act two is all inside his head?’”
Bond fans will remember this scene at the end of Spectre’s second act, where Blofeld has captured Bond, before 007 uses his gadget watch to escape – blinding and scaring the villain’s eye in the process.
It would certainly have been a very meta Inception-like film had Fukunaga gone with this idea.
Presumably, the third act would then have taken place shortly after the end of Spectre.
Daniel Craig in No Time To Die
During the interview, Fukunaga admitted: “I don’t think I’d seen every single James Bond film, but I was pretty well-versed on it.
“I don’t think I became a fan of the franchise until Casino Royale.
“Prior to that, my only in-depth James Bond experience was at my cousin’s house playing GoldenEye.”
The filmmaker was referring to the 1997 Nintendo 64 video game based on the 1995 Bond movie of the same name.

Over the weekend, Pierce Brosnan took part in a live-streamed rewatch of GoldenEye, his first Bond movie.
And during the two-hour session set up by Esquire UK, the 66-year-old revealed how he had to convince Daniel Craig to take on playing 007.
He said: “We did pass in the night Daniel and I, when my day was done.
“I knew that Daniel had been offered the part and he was very apprehensive about it.”
Brosnan added: “I remember seeing him one night in a club, I was having a great time with a group of friends and he was really wrestling with it.
“And I just said, ‘Go do it, you can do it, you’ll be brilliant, you’ll kick yourself if you don’t. Snap out of it and go be Bond.’
“And boy did he ever. It’s a challenge, it’s a big challenge.”
No Time To Die is released in UK cinemas on November 12, 2020.
