The new film Judy explores events surrounding The Wizard of Oz star Judy Garland’s last few months of life.

The one-of-a-kind singer was based in London for a stint of concerts over the course of five weeks, and she met her fifth and final husband Mickey Deans while she was performing there.

As the movie progresses, viewers see the star’s mental health deteriorate further and further, but Bridget Jones actress Zellweger insists Garland was actually “heroic”, and didn’t even get worked up about portraying the actress.

Appearing on tonight’s Graham Norton Show, the presenter asks if it was a worry trying to figure out how to get Garland’s look and sound just right.

“Oh no,” she cries. “I just didn’t let myself think about it like that at all, or what might happen.

“Every day for two years, pretty much, we were doing experiments – we just kept trying things until here we are.”

But the star then reveals the costume department made a very specific decision in order to ensure she played the role in a certain way.

“Judy slouched a little and the dresses were made so that I couldn’t have stood any other way,” Zellweger shared.

“I was literally sewn into them. It was a great reminder during the day if you got lazy because you had no option but to stand like her.

“The sequins were very strict!”

Zellweger goes on to share her own thoughts about the singer, and her affection for the late star and her role is clear.

“It’s not depressing and you can’t help but empathise with her,” the actress tells Norton.

“She’s not tragic at all because she didn’t quit.

“She’s heroic,” the star adds.

Louis Theroux, who is sitting next to Judy on the sofa, suddenly cuts in.

“I think I’d have made a documentary about her and I would probably have ended up being her 6th husband!”

Talking about her big break in Jerry McGuire alongside Tom Cruise, she says, “It changed my life overnight and Tom was the best teacher.”

The Graham Norton show airs tonight at 10.35pm on BBC One.

Judy is in cinemas now.
