Time travel back to the Seventies this season with an abundance of vintage inspired pieces.
Embraced across the AW17 catwalks by the likes of Marc Jacobs, Chloe, Miu Miu, Prada and Coach, this look keeps true to the original silhouettes and fabric choices of the era and is very much a replica of, rather than simply an inspired reinterpretation.
To get the look this season, base your edit around the Seventies key colour palette of of camel, tobacco, mustard and orange. Mix block colour with key prints to break up the look and add detail. The high street always reinterprets on trend prints really well so keep an eye out for retro wallpaper prints and chintzy florals.
In terms of fabrications, it is time to fully embrace autumnal temperatures with tweeds, shearling, corduroy and faux fur trims. This trend loves texture and as the days get longer and colder look to layer prints and Seventies inspired fabrics for maximum effect.
This era of fashion is particularly versatile as it includes great, everyday casual and workwear appropriate shapes and fabrics such as wide leg trousers, polo necks and pussy bow blouses, but still gives a nod to occasion wear too through lurex and metallic fabrics. After all this was the party period of Studio 54 and Seventies Glam Rock.
Want one statement piece for the season? Then it is all about key outerwear and the ‘del-boy’ shearling coat is already proving to be a high street hit. If you just add one Seventies piece to your wardrobe this autumn, then this is the one. Opt for cognac and cream tones to fully embrace the retro vibe.
But, if you aren’t quite ready for a full on retro revival, then you can inject this trend into your style through carefully edited accessories. The runway and high street have both gone crazy for vintage inspired footwear. Look out for a multitude of boot styles, including over the knee velvet boots, and metallic slouchy boots, as well as the much talked about ‘Gucci’ style loafer – the high street versions are a perfect match.
This is a great winter update for those missing summer’s bohemian vibes.
