REVEALED: Hero who grabbed gun to end New Zealand terror attack and save lives at mosque
The father-of-four confronted the white supremacist attacker as worshippers bled to death in Linwood mosque. He picked up one of his guns and chased him away. The selfless father said he tried to open fire at the shooter, but nothing happened when he pulled the trigger.
He said: “He got another gun on his hand and turned it on me and started shooting at me, and I just ducked between the cars and run.
“I wanted him to chase me in the car park as it would save more people in the masjid, but he didn’t see me probably.
“I went in the back and when I was running in the back I saw another dead body there and a gun was lying there, and I just grabbed the gun.
“I saw more shots coming through the masjid, and I started screaming ‘I’m outside, come outside’.”
Mr Aziz, who escaped unharmed, said the attacker then ran back to his car.
Mr Aziz said: “He gets into his car and I just got the gun and threw it on his window like an arrow and blasted his window.
“That’s why he got scared.”
The gunman is then believed to have put his middle finger up and said: “you’re all f***ing dead”.
Mr Aziz ran after the vehicle as it drove off down the street.
A suspected gunman was arrested by two officers shortly after.
It is believed he was on route to commit further attacks when he was stooped.
Officers initially mistakenly arrested Mr Aziz, originally from Afghanistan, when they arrived at Linwood mosque.
Police later released him when they realised he was not an attacker.
Mr Aziz’s story is just one of many to emerge after one of New Zealand’s deadliest terror attacks.
Some people were killed as they confronted the gunman to try and save others.
Mr Aziz added: “At the end of the day we’re all going to die anyway.”
Linwood mosque’s acting imam, Latef Alabi praised Mr Aziz for saving lives.
He said: “Aziz went after him…and that’s how we were saved.
“Otherwise, if he managed to come into the mosque, then we would all probably be gone.”
