Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker THEORY: Rey's relationship with Palpatine shown in fight?
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be released in a matter of weeks and many are keen to finally learn the truth about Rey’s (played by Daisy Ridley) past. Now, a fan theory has proposed evidence for rumours she could be a descendant of the Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid). A somewhat outlandish theory on the surface, there are some hints in the sequel trilogy to back it up.
“Yes I know, this has been touched on before, but after paying close attention to Rey vs Kylo in TFA tonight it’s clearly obvious that her fighting style resembles that of Palpatine’s very well,” Reddit user Psarrih wrote.
“Do I think she is a blood child of Sheev? Not necessarily,” they continued. “I do think that in regards to the leaks there is more to the ‘she is a descendent of Palpatine and his grandaughter’.”
The Star Wars fan noted that, if the connection is correct, The Rise of Skywalker would “have some explaining to do” when it came to how Rey was conceived.
“I personally think she is another product of the Force similar to Anakin but a product of Palpatine manipulating the Force to create an opposite to Kylo,” they said.

“This would confirm and flow with the leak info regarding Palpatine’s dyad plan with Kylo and Rey. And explain why she fights like Palps.”
It’s not the first time Rey and Palpatine’s fighting styles have been compared, with a 2016 Huffington Post article citing the similarity in a specific move.
When Rey initially uses The Force to summon the lightsaber to her in The Force Awakens, her first instinct it to stab horizontally at Kylo Ren with both hands on the hilt, a move strikingly similar to that used by Palpatne against Mace Windu (Samuel L. Jackson) in Revenge of the Sith.
The article noted how both Rey and Palpatine employ the move on multiple occasions during their major fight scenes and how it doesn’t fit in with traditional fighting forms or any other fighter’s style.
However, Star Wars fans aren’t satisfied with this explanation and remain adamant there’s more to Rey’s heritage than meets the eye.
On top of that, Simon Pegg, who played Unkar Plutt, revealed The Force Awakens and The Rise of Skywalker director J.J. Abrams had a different story in mind for Rey’s parentage than the one Rian Johnson went with.
“I know what J.J. intended, or at least what was sort of being chucked around,” he told the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “I think that’s kind of been undone slightly by [The Last Jedi].”
However things turn out with the conclusion of the trilogy, which is once again back in the hands of Abrams, there are bound to be questions asked and answered about Rey’s story.
Fans don’t have long to wait to find out as the December release draws ever closer.
