Ted Cruz caught struggling to keep eyes open during 'Sleepy' Joe's first Congress speech

The Texas Senator was caught seemingly falling asleep as discussed his plans to tackle mass immigration into the United States from South America. Ted Cruz could be seen with his eyes closed as the President spoke before suddenly opening them up to look towards Mr Biden. But after only a few seconds, Mr Cruz was spotted apparently dozing off once again as the US leader urged Congress to focus on plans to address issues driving hundreds of people into seeking refuge in the US.

The clip of Senator Cruz sparked some commentary about the performance of President Biden in his first speech to a joint session of Congress in his first 100 days in office.

One viewer commented: “Sleepy Joe’s uncanny talent has put the whole US to sleep.”

Another added: “It would be easy to fall asleep during his speech listening to Joe is worse than watching paint dry.”

And one more user said: “It’s like one of those introductory classes you are forced to take in school because it’s a pre-requisite.”

In addition to discussing the border issue, President Biden pitched a “once in a generation investment” for jobs, social care and education.

New policies included the American Jobs Plan and the American Families Plan, which the White House said would be funded through a tax increase on corporations and the wealthiest Americans.

Mr Biden branded his Jobs Plan as a “blue-collar blueprint to build America” as he insisted it was time for the wealthiest members of society to “pay their fair share.”

The President also insisted his policies would be driven by the fight against climate change, a commitment Mr Biden put at the centre of his administration.

House Minority leader Kevin McCarthy summed up his response to the Congress speech in a vitriolic tweet: “This whole thing could have just been an email.”

Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel dismissed the President’s first 100 days as “an unqualified failure.”

In a statement from the RNC, Ms McDaniel said: “Joe Biden’s first 100 days in office have been an unqualified failure, including unprecedented attacks on energy workers, a humanitarian crisis at the border, and an America-last foreign policy agenda.

“Then there is his hyper-partisanship, as he and Democrats attempt to abolish the filibuster, pack the Supreme Court, and force through their H.R.1 power grab.

“In his inaugural address, Biden called for unity. That was a lie, and our nation is worse off and more divided thanks to Joe Biden.”
