The Eternals cast: Will Richard Madden join Angelina Jolie to star in Marvel’s Eternals?

For Marvel fans not as familiar with the enigmatically named species, The Eternals are another race of humanity created by Jack Kirby. They first appeared in the comics in the 1970s and are an offshoot of the evolutionary process that created human life on Earth. The Eternals will be one of the early Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 4 movies.

Will Richard Madden join the cast of the Eternals?

According to Variety, Madden is in talks to join Angelina Jolie in the cast of Marvel’s upcoming The Eternals movie.

Madden, best known for his roles as Robb Stark in Game of Thrones and the recent BBC hit Bodyguard, will reportedly play an Eternal named Ikaris.

According to his comic book history, Ikaris is the son of the Eternals Virako and Tulayn, though his real birth name is unknown.

Angelina Jolie is rumoured to play Sersi, an Eternal leader with Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick) in an unnamed role.

The alien Celestials created the Eternals as part of an experiment on humankind, who were tasked with being the defenders of Earth.

But the Celetials also created a counterpart to the Eternals, called the Deviants.

Invariably there are conflicts between the two, but how and if they will play out in The Eternals’ film remains to be seen.

The script, adapted from Jack Kirby’s 1976 comic series, comes from Matthew and Ryan Firpo.

Neil Gaiman and artist John Romita Jr updated the Eternals’ storyline in 2006 to bring it up to date with the Marvel Cinematic Universe at the time.

Marvel’s Kevin Feige confirmed Marvel will release their schedule of upcoming films after Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Spider-man Far From Home is out in cinemas on July 2, 2019, so fans have some time to wait.

Feige said: “As we’ve been doing for years, we aren’t going to announce anything post-Avengers: Endgame or Spider-Man until post-Endgame and Spider-Man.”

“As you know as a fan, there’s a tremendous amount of potential and a tremendous amount of additional characters and storylines and groups of characters that we’re going to keep playing with.

“And again, that’s a testament to Marvel and to the amount of storylines and characters and amazing, amazing runs that have been in the Marvel comics.”

The Eternals movie has no salient details confirmed as of yet.

However, Feige told ScreenRant in June 2018 the Eternals movie could be based on “an ancient alien kind of sci-fi trope.”

How this plays out in the upcoming film remains to be seen.
