The Lion King first reactions: Critics in TEARS – ‘Best Disney remake, visual MASTERPIECE’
For better or worse, Disney have set about remaking many of their animated classics in a live-action format. Just this year we’ve already had Dumbo and Aladdin, with The Lion King ready to roar into cinemas later this month. The first reactions prior to the review embargo lifting are in, and the critics are loving it. Check out a selection of responses below, with some reviewers admitting to holding back the tears.
IGN
The Lion King is my favourite Disney movie of all time, so the new iteration is definitely not designed for me, but it’s easily the best of Disney’s remakes. Visually, it’s stunning – an unparalleled technical achievement that’s like watching a nature documentary.

The Lion King is a wonderful adaptation of an iconic classic. It has a few small changes which enhance what was already great and everything else is right on point.
The Wrap
It’s a visual masterpiece that will leave you smiling and crying the whole time.
Collider
The visual effects/animation in the film is INCREDIBLE. For the first time in maybe my entire life as the movie started, I got really emotional. Just hearing the music wrecked me. While it’s a story you know, it’s soooooo well done. Not sure I’ve ever heard as much clapping during a movie as I did tonight at The Lion King. Was like being at a rock concert. Movie is going to make so much money.

The Lion King is visually immaculate & a game-changer for visual effects. It’s absolutely stunning in every way. The music shines (Glover & Beyoncé take it to another level), the performances are great (Timon, Pumbaa & Scar steal many scenes) & the emotions run HIGH. Truly great
Uproxx
It’s the most beautiful effects movie I’ve seen. Like next level, the game has changed kind of thing.

Beyoncé is good in The Lion King — really good! Nala’s role is indeed bigger, and Bey suits it perfectly. There’s a moment when she tells Simba he’s ‘disappointed’ her, and reader, the way Bey bit the ’t’ in that word chilled me and thrilled me.
Hollywood Reporter
Timon and Pumbaa steal the show.
Comic Book
The Lion King does a really excellent job of honouring the original movie but also adds touches for this modern version. Those touches are a lot of fun and totally welcome.
Slash Film
The Lion King is a breathtaking visual cinematic achievement. I can’t believe this is a CG animated movie. Timon and Pumbaa steal the show. It’s a good Disney remake but was it necessary? Maybe not, but it’s enjoyable and families are gonna love it.
The Lion King is released in UK cinemas on July 19, 2019.
