WATCH: Seriously Ill Passenger Airlifted From Cruise Ship
A seriously ill passenger was airlifted from a cruise ship off the coast of Plymouth, England early Thursday morning.
The Coastguard was called around 2:15 a.m. and told that the unwell passenger needed urgent transportation to the hospital.
“The HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopter based at Newquay, with Captain Dave Crimmon, co-pilot Debdash Bhattacharya, winch operator Rob Glendinning and winchman Niall Hanson aboard, responded to call and made their way to the cruise ship which was positioned 30nm south of Plymouth,” HM Coastguard said in a statement.
“After arriving on scene they lowered their paramedic winchman onboard to treat the casualty. They secured the man and winched him into the aircraft where he was taken to Treliske Hospital.”
The dramatic rescue was caught on camera and posted to YouTube Thursday. The footage shows the ship navigating choppy seas in the dark, making the airlift more challenging.
The Coastguard confirmed that the cruise ship continued on its planned sailing to the Azores.
Thursday’s incident comes just days after an American couple’s dream cruise was cut short by a medical emergency that left them stranded in the Bahamas.
