Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi and Boba Fett spin-offs SCRAPPED after Solo ‘flop’?

Amidst news late last week that Kathleen Kennedy has had her stint at Lucasfilm renewed to at least 2021 was word that the current development slate has been given something of a clear-out.

Variety’s report on the situation says that a “spinoff development slate, which included a possible standalone for Star Wars character Boba Fett, has been flushed.”

Obi-Wan Kenobi has also long been thought to be getting his own film, with Ewan McGregor probed constantly about his potential involvement.

This, it seems, could well be off the table too – with all focus on Episode 9 and the TV projects.

It was first claimed in the immediate aftermath of Solo’s release that the spin-off plans were being massively scaled-back, but Ron Howard – who directed the troubled Han Solo prequel – played down such whispers.

“I don’t think it’s entirely accurate,” he told TMZ at the time.

“I think that was reported, but I don’t think that’s what I understand.

“Everybody at Lucasfilm and Disney really cares about the fans. I think it’s an ongoing process of discovering what it can be and what it can all add up to.

“It’s a process, and personally, I like that they take some chances, take some risks and see how people respond to it.”

Now, it seems the only project definitely in the works is JJ Abrams’ Episode IX, which is out in 2019 and is currently being filmed.

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are said to be working on film ideas for Lucasfilm, and Rian Johnson is also developing what has now been referred to by The Hollywood Reporter as a “potential” trilogy.

There’s much more definite traction in the TV department.

Jon Favreau is currently casting a live-action series, while animated works are also being prepared for Disney’s planned subscription service.

Solo: A Star Wars Story was released in May and is thought to have lost the studio around $50 million.

It’s a sharp contrast to 2015’s The Force Awakens, 2016’s Rogue One and 2017’s The Last Jedi – which all comfortably crossed the $1 billion mark.

Star Wars: Episode IX is out in late 2019.
