Blade Runner vs The Martian: Which sci-fi film will our society resemble in 120 years?

Science fiction films do their best to approximate what the future might look like.

Whether it is post-apocalyptic or utopian, the future is always radically different to the present day.

From movie to movie, each creator envisions an entirely different future for humanity, some of them even moving life to other planets.

But how likely are these futures?

Overall, a survey conducted online by Goodyear Tyres found the most popular vision of the future was Matt Damon’s The Martian.

Blade Runner was runner-up, with Tron in third.

Lastly was the Mad Max franchise, proving the public is slightly optimistic – giving the most dystopian and deadly last place.

But specific themes in science fiction were also investigated, from transportation to artificial intelligence.

Four-fifths (84 percent) of the 3,001 UK residents surveyed suspected all vehicles will be powered by renewable electricity in 120 years.

Nearly three quarters of people believed cars will be wholly self-driving by then.

A slimmer portion, 22 percent, said they believe people will have flying cars which resemble Blade Runner’s iconic ‘spinners’.

Three in five people predicted artificial intelligence will have developed in 120 years to such an extent that businesses will be run by robots.

Two in five people believed robots will have human brains, which no longer makes them a robot but a cyborg, technically.

Movies have long explored artificial intelligence, from Ex Machina to Her, the end often seems bleak for humans.

Despite the constant political battle over climate change, four-in-five people believe nature will be harnessed to develop new energy sources.

Two-thirds were optimistic enough to believe our cities will transform into garden cities, combining nature and technology.

This goes a long way to explain the final place Mad Max was given, with its barren wasteland.

Overpopulation has been tackled by many a movie, even Avengers: Infinity War and 47 percent of participants predicted cities will be overdeveloped and overcrowded.

This landscape, with people piled upon people, evokes the dystopian city of Los Angeles in Blade Runner.

Only seven percent of the survey takers believed humans will have relocated to another planet in 120 years from now.

Any of these futures could be possible if we don’t attend to our planet and each other.
